This weekend's project, turbo mods off to a good start

So I got a pretty good start on my weekend project, to Mod up my turbo. Planning on installing Wicked Wheel, new seals fro everything, EBPV delete, outlet delete, waste gate rod, Overboost annhilator and give things a good cleaning while Im under the hood.

This is starting point, need to take things apart.

IC tubes and boots out of the way

MAP sensor hose, Noah gave me his Overboost Annihilator I'll install it here; Thanks Noah "Biohazrdman"

Tricky little clip on EBPV rod

This is the clip removed

Turbo on the work bench, Question here; Do I want too shorten or lengthen the rod?

Not too happy to see this, high temp RTV oozing out of valve cover gasket

Turbo pedestal after the turbo was removed. Question here can I use gray anti sieze instead of copper upon reinstall?

My "Y" pipe on the bench

More nasty stuff to deal with, rusted battery tray.
So this was my head start on this weekend's project so far, I'll post more PIC's as the project progresses and try to finish up by the end of the weekend.

Nice! Keep up the good work and keep in mind that the EBPV clip is supposed to slide down the shaft, not rotate, I made the same mistake but if you're rebuilding the EBPV or removing it then you won't need it anyhow.

Well today wasn't as productive as I would have liked it to have been. Its Saturday and friends and neighbors have been dropping by all day. I just finished diagnosing fixing my one neighbors 1967 Cougar, he couldn't get to start. Then back on the turbo project again. I started today by cleaning the valley while the turbo was out. The rest of the 200+K grease, grime and dirt will have to wait for another weekend project.

Here's how the valley turned out. The rest of the motor is still pretty dirty though.

I got Clays patented billet plenum inserts installed, these are real nice pieces.

Finished cleaning and painting battery tray

Did my EBPV delete using Bob "Guzzle's" Viton O ring here

Tapped rod hole for a 3/8 inch NPT brass plug

Here's a pic of how that turned out

Greased O ring with some White Lithium Lube

And this is all I was able to accomplish today.
Tomorrow I am doing the turbo wicked wheel install and outlet delete, don't know if I'll have the truck back together by day's end though, I'll just have to wait and see.

You want to shorten the wastegate rod per what Clay told me a few weeks back.

Great Restoration Job,
Hat's Off to You.

I am doing a battery job this weekend also,

You may consider using the 3M Rubberized Undercoating on the battery tray,
it's high quality and has a rubber finish that will not break-down and make a mess
when in contact with Gas, Diesel and other chemicals. It will make the next battery tray last for a long time if you undercoat it.

Surprisingly Walmart stocks the 3M Undercaoting.

Don't use any other brand of undercoating.

The 3M Dries fast also, maybe 15 minutes to 1/2 hour, faster with a fan.

I am installing a 3rd. battery on my rig and I bought a Frame Battery Mount on ebay. It's like new condition from a "Pull". So I will be undercoating it tomorrow. Our Frames have holes in them pre-drilled for these battery mounts, and they work great.

I am installing a master kill switch for the batteries, and it's the Flamingriver brand,

I am using the laser key type, and I will install it at the drivers seat.
If I get an electrical fire I can shut it down right away and kill all juice.

All the best with your Projects,

Russ

Thanks for the great tips Russ. I like the idea of a batt shut off, seen these used in Ambulances, they work great.

Well today I only got a couple of things done, guess I will have to wait until tomorrow to install the turbo back into the truck. I had ran into some problems and called Bob, "GUZZLE" and he was able to walk me trough them. Thanks so much Bob, sorry to bother you on a Sunday but I was stumped.

Here's a look at the stock wheel, everything appears fine, little to no end play, inlet and outlet wheels look good. I don't know what do you guys think?

A comparison of the stock wheel and wicked wheel

Pulled off the Outlet in this PIC to get to the shaft and delete the outlets EBPV

Here is my gutted outlet

I started by grinding off the rivets that hold the butterfly trap

Then I just took a punch to knock out the rivets, the butterfly comes right out and then the shaft just slides out.

I used a socket to drive out the bushing the shaft rode on

Then I just cut a bolt to fit inside the bushing to weld in place

here's what it looks like welded in place

I reinstalled the welded bushing the same way it came out.

And this is it my deleted EBPV outlet all ready to bolt back on to the turbo

A pic of the Wicked Wheel installed and one of Bob's "GUZZLE"'s new Viton compressor housing O ring. I lubed it with White Lithium Lube ( I don't do Vasoline, LOL)

The turbo all ready to go back into the truck, you can see the shortened wastegate rod. I just need to torque the bolts down, I have no idea what the torque specs are, So if anyone can help me with that it would be greatly appreciated.

Looks good!!!
Here's what I found via Mitchell on Demand.....
Exhaust inlet pipe to exhaust inlet adapter polt: 36ft lbs
Turbocharger pedestal assembly to cylinder block bolt: 18ft lbs
Turbocharger pedestal assembly to turbocharger center housing bolt: 18ft lbs

Hope that helps though I don't think it's exactly what you're looking for but I think 36ft lbs should be fine.

Edit: Found some more.....
Turbocharger Mountoing Bolts
8mm: 18ft lbs
10mm: 36ft lbs
Exhaust Backpressure Valve: 106ft lbs

Thnaks Visseroth for the specs. I don't have Mitchell on demand just Motor All Data (which isn't All Data, thats why I didn't have the specs)
Thanks Mike, I appreciate the compliment.
