You can find a nice rust free supercab body in the south for a few thousand at most, the crate motor for $5000, and the suspension for $1200 or so. The tires and wheels are another $2000. the painting and body work, on a truck that nice, maybe $2000 or $3000 to have a shop do it.

And then if you start with a decent truck there wont' be a whole lot of other work... I mean, even to pay a shop to do everything, it doesn't add up to 34k. I mean, geez, the thing still has a dana 60 rear with drum brakes!!!!

My lift isn't on yet but my supercab is going up 10".
I wish i lived near you. I am charing a friend 25 an hour to do a frame off resto on his 79 and i have over 6k in labor alone(240 hours). Any shop around here is going to charge 65-75 an hour which would make the labor rate rise to 15,600- 18,000. PLUS materials

yeah but if youre gonna pay a shop 18k to do it why not just go buy a new truck?

I dont see the point in that.

I wouldn't pay some wrench jockey more per hour than I make as an attorney to bolt on a bunch of parts. And there is nothing super custom or fabricated on that truck. Like I said, dana 60 with drum brakes, dropped pitman arm, no crossover steering... bolt on lift kit. Its not particularly exciting for 30k. Not trying to thread jack. Just pointing out that its not a good value.

You are right, we are high jacking this thread but. But for that same truck as a 2011 you would be looking at over 50k. And just cause it is new goes NOT make it good. At least the 79 is not some run of the mill cookie cutter Yuppie truck that every soccer mom drives

It's a very nice looking truck, but, the big wheels make me want to gag.

While the truck does have a lot of "rare" parts, I dont see that truck selling for what he is trying to get for it.

But only time will tell. 18 bids-5 days left- 16,000 current bid. There is action on the truck.

Agreed...I have a couple e-buddies that did all their own work (well one had someone paint his truck) and with NOS/Dennis Carpenter parts, they were well in to 15-20k in parts alone, much less what a shop would have charged for labor. I can't believe I haven't seen either of their trucks on this board though...one is a green on green 79 sittin on 44" Boggers...owners name is John, anyone know him? I know the truck as 2HI. Another guy I know from a local board is named Ben with a pretty nice red and white 77 on Boggers. Are either of those guys members here? If not, I'll have to send an invite.

Edit...sorry for the major thread jack.

I can see how it costs $34,000. Easy. I am doing my Supercab and am into it for $12,000 and am no where near finished. All my labour. BUT, It will be a new truck when I'm done.

I'll continue with the threadjack here...

Why not go buy a new truck? Hmmm, maybe it's because they are plastic pieces of crap that will fall apart in 3 years

These old trucks have done well for 40 or so years, so why not give them a little refresher and let them serve us for another 40+???? Besides new trucks don't turn heads like old trucks do, and I like to be different. And it that's not enough for you - the resto of an old truck will end up costing a bit less than a brand new truck. So it's win-win. Or win-win-win-win!

As for paying a "wrench jockey" - you are one of the very few desk jockies that may also have the skills of turning a wrench. I am one as well and I do all my own work because I couldn't afford to pay the people I would ALLOW to work on my truck. I'm a fab snob and therefore only people who are better at doing this than I am can touch my truck. That narrows the list quite a bit and puts the labor rate at $75/hr or well more. Needless to say - I end up doing all my own work

I have people ask me all the time to build stuff for them and unfortunately I don't have enough spare time to work on my own stuff so unless I REALLY need some spare cash, or they are a friend who I'm feeling extra generous about helping the answer is no. IF I do work for you my labor rate varies on how well I know you, how busy I am and what it is I am doing. Only my buddies can pay me less than I make at my day job - everybody else pays $75-$95+ an hour depending on how nice I am feeling.

My point is - there can easily be $34k in that truck if he paid someone else to do it, and most people don't have the skills to do it RIGHT by themselves, so they pay someone else
