My turbo on my 94 IDI is just about shot. I was thinking about getting it rebuilt but the fins started to dig into the housing, so I'm thinking new. Where can I get a new replacement or something that will work? All I need is the turbo really, I'm not looking for a kit, or maybe a base kit that doesn't involve everything that a banks kit would. Any ideas? Any place I can buy these without draining my life savings? Thanks guys.

Turbos are pretty high milage parts, given they are taken care of (no loss of oil, no overheating, regular oil changes). I bet you could find a good used one at a yard that would last the life of the truck.

If you do, make sure there is no obvious physical damage, and check for shaft end play. Radial play is only a concern if it is obviously excessive, which usually corresponds with excessive endplay. You can force a compressor wheel to touch the housing, but it doesn't mean it's bad. Once oil pressure and spinning motion is present, it will never touch. Make sure it turns freely with no rough spots and that the wheels are in good shape.

I'm sure there are aftermarket turbos you can buy new as well in the numerous diesel tuner websites/stores.

 

I would send clay at riffraff a call and ask him if he can get you a rebuild kit or something to replace it... ats makes a turbo for your truck too though
