Lost Keys =(

I lost the keys for my 79. I called a locksmith and asked if i could take the cylinder out of the door and he could make a key for it, and he told me the door locks and the ignition are cut different and it wouldnt work! Is this true? I thought the ignition and the door locks were the same! I cant get the ignition out without the original key... what should i do

I think if everything is original to the truck than the ignition and door locks are the same, if not original than no. Not sure what locksmiths charge, but it may be cheaper just to replace the ignition switch and door locks all together. If you have a junkyard to go to, see if you can find them. New ones aren't too expensive, but used ones would be cheaper.

Door and ignition were the same on these trucks. Now with a 30 year old vehicle, who knows what is on there now, but if it is all original, the door lock will be the same.

It's easier to take the ignition switch out....
I think you just unscrew it or slide a pin out or something...
Yes, as two other's have stated, they would be the same, if, you haven't had them replaced....

Are you sure...?
I wish I was near my truck so I could go out & see how it comes out....
I just remembered somethin'....
I think there's a pin that holds it in, when you put the key in, it pops inwards, so the cylinder lock can slide out....

Take off your door panel, inside you can see the cylinder lock. Unhook the rod, and pull off the spring clip.

Here's what I remember. If you have a locking glovebox your door and ignition are different. If you had a round and square key they are different. You can look at the cylinders if the offsets are opposite they are different. To remove the door lock there will be a large clip at the back of the door in the jamb end of the door in line with the lock. Pull the clip with some channellocks then the lock cylinder can be finessed out of the door. By wiggling it the rod and plastic clip will come out of the hole and can be unhooked. secure the rod with something so it doesn't fall back in.

If you have any old school salvage yards nearby they will have a key can. If they'd let you take the Ford can (probably with a deposit) you'll probably find one in there. Some towing or locksmith companies may have a master set. You just keep trying til one fits. Hope I've been some help. Good luck!!!

All 73-79 trucks use the same key for door and ignition which was "square".

Locking gloveboxes and hood latches used a seperate "round" headed key.

Starting in 1980 the trucks used seperate keys, square and round for ignition and door.
