Well, the muffler part is ok, the tailpipe is ok (but whats wrong with the stock one), and Flowmasters tips are terrible. For starters, the tips are not made by Flowmaster, they are made by the low bidder in China.
I think you money would be better spend on just a muffler and the tip of your choice.

You probably will not notice any difference mpg and power wise. The stock tailpipe probably has a resonator on it and the catback will get get rid of that. The FM70 does a good job of keeping drone down with a little extra sound over stock. I have a similar flowmaster catback with the same muffler on my truck and I installed one on my dads truck. For the money the system is pretty good IMO, the muffler alone sells for $150. The tip will get messed up easily as will most other tips out there, the tip can easily be replaced. The bad part about the system is the included clamps are junk and since the system is aluminuized steel it rusts quite abit faster than a 409 system. I replaced all the clamps with stainless ones and fabbed up a new stainless clamp/hanger that clamps the muffler and tailpipe section. I also got some 1/2" stainless shaft collars to keep the hangers from slipping out of the rubber hangers. The bends and muffler of are good quality, thats what counts. Still better than what you get fabbed up at the majority of the exhaust shops out there. I have over 2 years on my system and so far so good.

Yes, it's likely good as most FM stuff is.
But I would have to concur with dkf - don't expect much in the way of hp or mpg if your stock muffler and tailpipe are in good condition. The stock system is very good. I'm sure the FM marketing department has some unsupported or generic claims about hp you can regurgitate to others.... 18 hp improvement! * (* on 1976 Dodge truck with crushed factory muffler)
It will be somewhat louder, which many folks "perceive" as more powerful. Of course, along with that comes desire to push pedal harder which will result in net mpg decrease.
As for sound, some love FM "sound", some hate it.

The way I look at it, there are some gains to be had on replacing the muffler, but the biggest gains are in the sound, not necessarily performance. However, the stock pipe is 409 stainless steel, whereas this kit says it uses mild steel, which will rust out in a few years. Switching from stainless to mild is downgrade in terms of quality. Then as part of this kit you get a stainless steel tip, that will probably turn gold in a couple weeks. There are tips to be had out there that not only won't discolor, but are probably nicer looking and less expensive.
I would just replace the stock muffler with a performance muffler of your choice, and if you want a tip, get one that you like.

I've heard these offer an inexpensive upgrade in terms of exhaust temps etc...

That's similar to my personal preference for V8 tow vehicles! They come in several models - I usually use the 3" 21313 version. Sold under walker and DynoMax labels. Quiet, efficient, reasonably priced, pretty durable. Rather BIG, but that is what it takes to achieve high flow AND low noise. The shorter one is definitely louder but not quite obnoxious with a very deep tone. The kids love it! We frequently arrive at campgrounds late at night so I prefer quieter.

I agree with Khan Tyranitar,
Keep your stock SS system and replace with a performance SS muffler. Your local muffler shop should be able to cut-out your old one and weld in a new one for under a 100 bucks.
I went with Magnaflow as they have the SS with a 3"in/offset thats pretty close to the stock muffler dimensions. I dont believe you wil find a direct fit muffler so pick one close to its size.

The MSRP seems like a lot but you can find on-line for 130+ or less. Got mine on amazon for $102 and free ship.
