Converting to 2wd from 4x4
I know this sounds crazy but I have an 88 F150 4x4 that first off has two different gear ratios due to a carrier going out and the PO replaced the whole axle with a junk yard one with 3:55 and the front still has 4:10 gears, next last week the Tcase started binding up and popping. Now this truck never sees dirt or snow so the 4x4 is not needed and I am on a budget so I am wondering what I would need if anything beside a longer drive shaft to get rid of the tcase? I pulled it this morning but I am not sure if I will need a different cone for the rear of the transmission or if I can just slide the yoke onto the output shaft of the trans and go?
Any help would be appreciated.

It would be easier to replace transmission with a 2wd unit, and most likely cheaper also, to convert yours the output shaft will have to be replaced as will the extension housing and that will require a complete tear down..
I would think it might be easiest to repair or replace the transfer case. You could leave the front drive shaft out so you don't make a mistake and put it in 4wd and break some thing.
That way if you decide to sell or decide you DO want 4X4 all you would have to do is re-gear the front or rear diff. (depending on which gear ratio you want to go with..
YMMV

Don't tempt me. If you were here today I'd say swap all you want but I know me and in the future I am probably gonna want to make this thing a toy and be kicking myself for getting rid of the 4wd.
On another note it looks like it was my tcase oil pump making noise for me so I found one for 18 bucks so I will just swap it out for the time being.

You are on the right track, fix it. When you get it back together, take the front driveshaft out & when you have the funds, change your ring & pinion so they match. My $.02
