Did you cycle the key on and off to purge the air? Something like on for 30 seconds, off for 15 seconds, and then turn it over.

EDIT: You need to do this 6 or so times. And welcome to FTE.

How much diesel did you put in. I'm not sure but I remember you need about 3-4 gal. to build up some fuel pressure before it starts.

That is an excellent idea, and will tell you if the pump is primed and working. But don't forget that when you ran it out of fuel you got bubbles of air into the fuel runners in the heads. The Kon/Koff will prime the pump, but those fuel runners are dead ends and you have to work the bubbles through the injectors. The only way that I know to do that is to crank-crank-crank. Once it fires, expect it to run poorly for a little while. Be sure to give your starter plenty of rest, and you might need a battery charger or jumper cables.

It's a real bad deal to run these out of fuel.

Reset the fuel shutoff.

Also, reset computers.

There is a programmed power down when you run low on fuel -- you may have activated it.

I certainly don't know everything, but I've never heard of this.

Could you please expand?

A power "derate" is far from a "power down". Anyway, I've never heard of the need to reset anything to get them restarted, unless it has damaged the injectors. Which can certainly happen.

I've read the power "derate" before, but I must admit that I don't understand it, because I have frequently run the fuel down until the Low Fuel warning light comes on, but I have never felt a loss of power. Of course, I've never run it that low while pulling a trailer. Only around town where I felt safe in finding fuel quickly.

Once, when I first got mine, I was on the road and almost too far from fuel. I finally found a place to fill up with 6 miles to go on the lie-o-meter. I don't remember a power loss, but I wasn't asking much of the truck either. I've never had a lighter right foot than I did that day.

Over at the SD forum discussion with Chris Brewer (SD Chief Engineer), I had a rather frank and candid conversation about the software dingos and the programmed shutdown of the engine when it runs out of DEF.

My concern is, so many times, the failure is not due to running out of DEF, but the sensors, etc. that fail --- which the SW turns around and interprets as a DEF failure --- and shut down the car.

Real bad to have that without an override that can be punched in by the operator in a pinch.

More software dingos.
