Stock vs AFE Airfilter

Fellas,
I purchased my truck used and it came with an AFE air filter. I just cleaned it up the other day and noticed it was starting to look like in rough shape. Per the previous owener this is the 2nd truck its been on as a little age to it. I am trying to decide if should replace with the filter with another AFE filter ($75) or go with the stock($?). The AFE air box is fine. If I go back to the stock filter I would need to buy the filter box & new filter. I have read many, many, many posts and i completely understand that the stock air filter on the 6.0 is as good as any and doesn't ever ever need to be replaced with aftermarket filter. However, in my situation should i just buy another AFE filter or go back to stock? What is the overall opinion on AFE filters?? Again, main concern is longevity of the truck (as usual and thats why I read all the posts...)
Thanks for any input, much appreciated.

What is the biggest factor at this time that concerns you the most? Cost? Able to reuse? Performance? Filtration? Looks?

If it's 1, 2, and/or 5(or anything along those lines) at this point it dictates towards the AFE. If it's 3 and/or 4 then that would point to a stock setup.

1 is a wildcard though. It could save you in the front end but bite you in the rear later on.

I personally would go back to stock for the protection of my engine and turbo, however, it's your truck!

Check salvage yards.... may find one that has the housing in fine shape....
(Not like a filter housing will wear out )
or they can use their locator service to find one fer ya

Jayy,

If it is the AFE Stage I air filter (oval metal box that clips in place with a filter insert ), it is a direct replacement for the stock air filter. To return to stock, you merely unclip the box from the intake and then clip the stock filter where the box was. If you have an AFE Stage II, there is quite a bit more to it.

It must be a stage 1 filter. Everything looks the same as stock except for the air box. I'll just keep my eye open for another air box so i can go back to the stock filter. Thanks for the info.

I have yet to replace the filter on mine (stock), but IIRC what looks like the "air box" on the stock setup is actually the filter. So essentially all you need to do is go buy a replacement filter and you are back in business. Check the tech folder for a guide on replacing the air filter, it has pictures of what the stock setup looks like.

Jayybird,

Yes, I guess I didn't explain it very well. The stock filter is a combination of the paper filter and a hard plastic (or fiberglass) cover box as one unit (I believe the paper filter is glued in the cover box) . All you would need to do is purchase a stock filter, unclip the AFE Stage I filter, and the clip the stock filter in it's place. No additional parts needed! Should take just a few minutes.

OHHH! Sorry...it took a while to click. I just googled a few pics of the stock filter. I was under the assumption the "box" separetly housed the filter (2 pieces). But as your saying, it appears to be all one piece, and just clips into place, correct?

If so, i was making a big deal out of this...sorry about that fellas. I was thinking the stock filter was similar to the AFE, and the filters on my wife's car and toyota. Where you open the box, remove the filter and throw away and then put a new one in. My bad...easy enough. I'll just go buy the dang filter...and its about $20 cheaper than the AFE. Great.

THanks for the clarification.
