92 ford f-350 tach.

just bought a 92 F-350 7.3 dsl 4x4 XLT auto.

The truck is a auto trans. and I like to replace it with a 5 speed manual. The tach don't work. This is the question, do the tach read from the speed sensor that is used for the auto trans or something else? Can I get rid of that sensor? Could there be another problem? Do I need something to make it work with the 5 speed manual?

thanks Matt

If you look right at the front of the engine on the injector pump housing and beside the oil filler cap you will see the tach sensor. It is like a large hex nut with two wires out of it. A common fault is the wires braking where they come out of the sensor.
If you have an E4OD trans it needs the tach to be working to shift properly but has nothing to do with the operation of the tach.
Swapping to a manual will not interfere with the operation of the tach in any way.
If you go on down the main forum you will come to the diesel section and there you will see the page for the IDI (pre power stroke) engines. If you post any questions you have there you will get a mountain of help. Also plenty of guys there have done the swop you are thinking of.
Good luck.
