Came across a 51 Club Wagon at Pull A Part

Was walking the Pull a part in Memphis and walked upon what they had listed as 51 Club Wagon. First time I heard of a Club Wagon, would this be a panel truck or did they have a Club Wagon. It did have the big front fenders. The inside was empty and the very rear doors were gone. I wish I had a camara with me.

The station wagons were, of course, known as the country squire wagons (Woodies--aka BIG BUCKS)
I'm not sure what the "panels" were called.
I've never heard of a Club wagon, but then again, I've never heard of a lot of things!...slim

Did it have truck fenders and side windows? Did you notice the suspension? Two wheel or four wheel? I wish you had a camera too!

I don't think the Club Wagon term came into use before the advent of the Econoline based passenger vehicles of the '70s. I think Bob was asking if it looked like this. If so it might have been a Marmon Herrington Ranger. Stu

Stu,

Wouldn't that just make you cringe if it was a Ranger sitting in a Pull a Part?

With only door windows sounds like a panel truck, some yutz doing inventory didn't know what he had.

Yeah, but you know that over the years some have been picked clean, or worse yet sent intact to the crusher. When you think about all the effort guys make to resurrect the things, or like Mark, to recreate the special body and interior pieces, it's enough to make you cry. Stu

Stu,

Do you have an idea on the whereabouts of that Ranger in your posted picture? It's similar to one that was in around the Seattle, WA area a few years ago. I have a picture of it sitting in storage somewhere.

Here it is. Picture was taken in April or May of 2006.

Same truck. It was for sale, and I think it did sell but don't know that for certain. I'm sure Mark has kept track of it. Stu

Kinda funny. I was walking around the same PaP in Memphis this morning and saw the same truck labeled 51 Club Wagon. I was just trying to look it up to show my son and came across this thread.

I couldn't believe someone would turn in a car like that. It was in pretty decent shape for a 60 year old truck with just minor surface rust. (it looked better than my 68 Nova ).

I'm sure they could have found someone to pay $500-1000 for it pretty easy. They also have a 51 Chevy Bel Air out there that was more like what you'd expect. It's a shame that they'll most likely end up crushing it.

I wonder how hard it is to get something like this titled if someone did want to put it back on the road.

Here in Illinois if a vehicle has made it to the salvage yard it has a salvaged title which means it cant be titled again, unless you just happen to run across a good title and the "ole switchero" is done. You can however if you have the $$$ get a new chassis, the paperwork that comes with them, use salvage yard body parts to rebuild it but the drawback to that is after all the inspections and stuff the vehicle will be titled as a 2010 custom and not what it really is. Yup Illinois stinks....

Unfortunately I didn't get any pics, but I go pretty regularly and it's a block from my work, so I'll grab a few with my phone next time I'm there.

I think titling them varies state to state. In Mississippi, from what I've heard, you can get pretty much anything titled with a bill of sale.

Unfortunately I don't think pull-a-part will sell you the entire car. I've seen people pull everything except the frame, though.

The term Country Squire was first applied in 1951, previous "woodies" were just called station wagons.

1949/51's are not all wood like the 1929/48's were, and all only have 2 doors.

1949 station wagons have a wooden upper/lower tailgate. The right/left side rails are wood which were bolted to a metal inner frame. The inserts were painted to look like mahogany.

1950/51 upper/lower tailgate is steel, painted to look like wood, all the inserts are decals.

1952 was the last year for wood rails, the inserts were decals. 1953/91, the rails are fiberglass and the inserts are decals.

In 1952, Ford introduced the 2 door Ranch Wagon and the 4 door Country Sedan, neither had any 'wood' paneling. The Country Squire continued, now having 4 doors.
