Best grit for smoothing door handles?

I'm in the mood to smooth out and paint my door handles. What is the best grit sandpaper to use for such a project? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

If you have plastic texture, cut it down with 180 and then after the grain is almost completely gone bump up to 220 and then 320. Use a good adhesion promoter, then prime the handles. Put a final sand of 320g on the primed handles and they will be ready for final prep and paint. Don't go above 320-400g, as the paint will need a mechanical adhesion to bit on to properly. Good luck!

more painting info wanted

have been thinking of painting my handles also but was wondering if the handle can be removed from the surround so you can sand paint and prep the hidden areas behind the pull handle

thanks
