How many miles is too much for a V10?

I'm about to possibly purchase a 2001 Limited 4wd V10 with 114000 miles on it. Is that too much for a gas engine in these things? The price is right, in the $8k-> range. original owner, all service records. My brother in law says diesel diesel diesel! But that ranges about $14-18k then in cash. If the truck is in great shape otherwise, you think it's worth it (for the V10)? Or will I be nickel and dimed?
Thanks for all your answers!

I bought a 2005 F250 V10 (granted it is the 3 valve) with 95K from the county and it has been like a rolex. I put about 30K a year on it and it runs great. Not the best mileage by any stretch, but a very smooth and strong motor.

The mileage does not seem high to me.

Check with your model year and known issues, like spark plugs.

114,000 is not high for the V-10. I would get an Oasis and Carfax report on the truck before purchasing. If properly maintained, the V-10 is good for 300,000 or more. Mine has 165,000, and still runs like a top!

What about the rest of the vehicle? Like electrical, heater, etc. How has the truck been holding up in that way?

My '03 V-10 has 104k and compared to my '98 Chev 1/2 ton at the same mileage the Ex. feels like new. Absolutely love the truck. No major issues since I got it at 90k. Just some upgrades for towing.

180K on my V10 - still going strong. Shouldn't be a problem as long as the oil was changed regularly and they used the correct oil.

The only issues i have had is replace two alternators, one at 120,000, the second one at 145,000 which was covered under the alternator's manufacturer warranty. Only other expenses have been maintenance: 1 belt, brakes, filters, fluids, 1 battery.

114k is nothing for these motors. I have a few customers with over 200k with no engine issues. One is a F250 V10 with 240k and it has no oil leaks - none. He's been very consistent with his maintenance and not used cheap oil or filters. Sounds like a good deal to me. Now... I could tell you a few horror stories of GM products without even breaking the 100k mark and leaking and falling apart. But no bias on my part.... :-)

For bigobob - have you gotten an ABS code yet? A good code scanner should be able to read the ABS codes and give you an idea of where to start.

no code yet ,my next step i guess, i replaced vss checked fuses wiring to front hubs etc. if i hold brake pedal down on start up abs light cycles and stays off till i let pedal up then it comes on. I also had the cruise control problem it just quit one day and a few months later started working again, I checked the disconnect switch on the master cyl. and it was wet then i remembered fords tsa on fires stated by this so i was checking it out when it fryed on me right there smoke and sparks I was lucky to be able to pull the wires in time replaced the switch and all is well.

I just bought my V10 Expedition with 173k miles on it last week... not a lead underneath, no smoke out the tailpipe - runs smooth and tight.

Gosh, I hope it's not too much as I'm just a few clicks away from 180k on mine.

Sounds like a decent deal to me. I have had mine for 2 and a half years. Changed plugs and did regular maintenance. Only repairs have been both rear brake calipers had to be changed. Other than that just some upgrades for towing. Love my Ex!!!

I am going to 2nd your brother on the Diesel thing! If you are going to keep this Ex and tow with it and drive it a lot the Diesel will be a much better setup! If it's just for the occasional tow on vacation then get the V10 for sure!! I have 2 gassers with 100K and 144K and they run like they did when new, just a little down on power from when they were newer!
