Turbo fart with smoke

Turbo fart with smoke
I'm towing about a 7000 lb load and between 1950-2150 rpm I'm experiencing a severe power loss with what I would describe as a turbo fart (air coming back out the intake) and belching black smoke out the exhaust. It's a standard transmission and I have about 107k miles. I'm trying to limp into Des Moines tonight and will get the codes read in the morning. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Take the EGR valve out and give it a good cleaning first. If it's relatively clean then think turbo. Kinda sounds like the EGR valve is sticking in the wrong position during a boost situation causing the fart and belch from lack of positive air movement into the motor. Get it code scanned if you can.

There is lots of information on the 6.0 in the tech folder at the beginning of this forum. Here is a link to the EGR cleaning thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...egr-valve.html

You'll need a 10mm socket and 8 or 12" extension, lady's foot crowbar, carb (not brake) cleaner. It can be very very stubborn to get out if it's carboned in. Undo the connector, remove the two bolts, twist slightly (to clearance the bolt holes) and pry up. Sometimes it helps to put a loop of wire through the two ears (bolt holes) and pull or leverage up. If you don't tear the o-rings you can reuse them but I would recommend replacing them at the earliest possible convenience. Part #'s are in the tech folder also.

Npcpartsman-
Thanks for all your help. Got it fixed on the side of the road here in Des Moines. Had it scanned with an EGR fault. Pulled and cleaned the EGR, it wasnt too dirty but cleaned it up anyway. Reinstalled and it was still smoking and farting at 2,000 RPM. Talked to the dealer here and his opinion was the same as yours, EGR valve. He said that they used to clean them but now just replace them when there are issues. Found one at O'Rielly for about half of what the dealer wanted. Threw that in and it works like a champ.
I really appreciate your help, I finally found a real computer to post the results of my work. Your links and info saved my butt.
Take care.

You are more than welcome. It sucks to be broken down and stranded and no one to help when you're miles from home. Happened to my wife when we moved from NC back to Arkansas. FASS went out and she couldn't get some "dirt trackers" to change a fuse for her (it was under the truck on the frame rail). Glad you got your issue fixed successfully.
