brake help on 49

What is the best disc brake kit for my 1949 F-1? I have been thinking of upgrading my stock brakes. they don't work very good I have one back brake that will lock up before any of the rest will and one front brake that I cannot get any brake fluid to come out when I bleed them.

Hello Grant! You have brakes that are not getting fluid to the cylinders. My 49 had the same problem, found the hoses were plugged. I had to replace them with new ones from Car Quest Parts store. The rubber line inside the hose breaks down from old age. This will block the fluid exchange into and out of the wheel cylinders. Check the cylinders for rust and replace them if they have leaked into the dust boots. Hope this helps you.

I rebuilt my brakes on my '52, but I don't remember who made the parts. It made a huge difference, my right rear would always lock up on medium braking and throw me into the other lane.. very scary... it happened because the brake cylinders needed to be rebuilt. I rebuilt them, and put in new flex hoses and they have been extremely reliable, pedal is firm and it stops quick and straight.

If you havn't done it yet, get a Master Cylinder rebuild kit.. if you are going to be working on the brakes, might as well cover all aspects.

My '48 has a totally new system except for the mc which I rebuilt. I found most parts are available from local auto parts houses like NAPA.

The only thing I couldn't get locally was the front drums - they're unique to 48-52's. Rears drums are same 48-67.

I agree with the others - the new system stops like new. I have no need for discs up front.

Grant I have not bought from Concours but I think they have been around awhile. I would check with local auto parts stores such as NAPA etc see whats available and compare costs.
