Power Steering Fluid...which to use?

Hey guy's...is it ok to use any MERCON V ATF fluid in my power steering system?....I am thinking about going with the Mobil 1 ATF to use when I do my power steering system flush. Would that be ok to use?

Mercon V is recommended. Not sure about Mobil 1. I'm sure someone will chime in soon.

I'm using Mercon V synthetic and have a filter. The filter's been on over a year now. Talked to the guy that sells them and he said that since they are designed for auto tranny,s that one should be good till pump replacement time. Lots of diff. in flow and clutch material in a tranny vrs. P.S. system.

How are you guy's sucking out all the olf fluid from the power steering tank with a turkey baster???? I bought a baster and with mine all i could get was like half the fluid from the resevoir...unless they make longer turkey baster i dont see how you are emptying the tank each time to do a flush. Any secrets???

I put a piece of vacuum hose on the end of the turkey baster to get all the fluid out.

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby...this pump works excellent.

That pump is a great idea! And I have a Harbor Freight near me. Super bonus. Thanks for the idea.

It really is a great little workhorse...I've used it several time...just get some soapy water in a utility sink and flush it thoroughly before storage. Great for filling transfer cases...differentials, or any other tight space situations where fluids are concerned.

Remove the return hose from the booster, put a 30" hose on the booster and have someone pump the brakes while you hold the hose in a 2 litre plastic bottle. Engine running. Don't let the pump suck air. It will come out pretty fast and you flush the whole system that way. I went thru 4 qts. in about 15 min. Just like flushing the brake system but only one bleed point.

Also put the front up on jack-stands so wheels are off the ground...then have someone (like 69cj said...have the engine running) and turn the steering from lock to lock...slowly.

Any problems with the two fluids getting mixed? As in if I don't get all the old stuff out completely and then used the mobile 1 synthetic?

No problem mixing and if you go thru 4 qts. there shouldn't be much mix left anyway.
