What is a loud and real good soundin exhaust for my truck? I have a 97 350 with 7.5l 460 motor. Right Now I have a glasspack mini/light on it. It sounds good but I want it to talk more. What should I put on it? I also am using a 3.5in exhaust tip on it. I have a 2.5in pipe. Single pipe only no dual exhausts... Thanks.

thet best sounding pipes are 2 foot long glasspacks with 2 inch straight pipe all the way out the back with 3 inch boom tips or bigger sounds good and loud I had them on my 91 with a 351 and everyone loved them go on youtube and type royston muddin in the search box and look for my confederate flag ford truck and listen to to pipes it sounds like a monster truck I loved the sound of that truck and am doing the same pipes on my new truck

 

Ugh, there have been two hillbilly douchewads with insanely loud straight piped trucks that must be visiting the neighbors down the road or something. Do people have no respect for other people anymore?

2'' inch straight's on a 460 are not only restrictive, but sound retardulous. you sound like you are going 100mph at 2,000rpm's. my truck with single 3'' 2' glasspack w/o cat sounds nice and powerful under full power, but is manageable sound wise at low rpm's. if you go with duals, 2.5's or 3's with any decent glasspack/quality muffler will sound good and loud. it is a big block. they are bassy enough to set off car alarms at cruising speeds. you have to figure out if you want it loud, or to sound good. loud is easy to make, but sounds horrible

 

Ok, probably going to get burned for this, but oh well.

Exhaust systems and sounds are all personal preference. Some people like the loud crackling sounds of straight pipes, the low bassy sounds and occasional crackles of glasspacks, some like large turbo mufflers, and others like the chambered sound of a flowmaster-like system. I personally am a fan of the flowmasters, but to each his own. The only way to find what you like is to find a bunch of sound clips and see what you like.

With my 351W, I have a true-dual exhaust system without an H or X pipe, stock manifolds, 2.5" pipes, and the exhaust is dumped right out from the Flowmaster Super 44s. I love the sound of them, and mine too can set off car alarms when they park next to my truck or I drive by them. Its got a little bit of a crackle on the deceleration side, but its just what I wanted. Here's a not-so-good clip of mine I took awhile back. Good luck and have fun!

the big difference that i am getting at here is that a windsor and a 385 series sound nothing alike even with the same exhaust. dozer was also talking about a smallblock. huge difference in volume of airflow. sbf's sound pretty good with almost any exhaust. the op has a 97 f250 w/ 460, basically the same as mine. unless he want's to go full custom exhaust, the head pipes lead into a y with the o2 sensor. the easiest way to go from there is to cut before the cat and run either a 3'' single, or a y off of that into duals, which i would not go any less than 2.5's unless you enjoy restricting flow and adding extra back pressure. i've had both, and the 3'' single flows better and feels better all around. i have also had several 460's with various exhausts. i love 2.5 true duals w/glasspacks for a stock motor. glasspacks are a preference, but the pipe size is optimum for back pressure v.s. flow.

 

Easy man, I wasn't trying to say that any particular thing was better than the others, and yes I know that the way a 351W is going to sound different than a 460 (larger engine, bigger explosion, bigger boom.....) ALSO, the OP wasn't asking for what performed best, merely what sounded the best......all a matter of opinion and personal preference.

 

Ihad the same setup on my bronco with a 460 and it sounded the same but louder then 351 so it is what a person is into for sound not everyone like the crackle of straight pipes but they do sound nince if done right I don't run cats in mine and I usally down side the pipe running to the back to get more crackle out of the pipes I have broke windows in my 351 as I passed parked cars I don;t suggest this but it dose sound good on a 460 also
I have also domped my pipes with glasspacks on dauls with headers right after the glasspacks I put a 90 angle bend and that is so lound that I have set car alarms off from 6 blocks away and windows on houses

Extremely loud pipes don't do anything but **** other people off who are trying to enjoy their lives. They don't need you butting in with your obnoxious vehicle.

You can have a great sounding exhaust without waking up everyone at the cemetary.

I have tried every type of muffler and pipe combination for the last 45 years or so. It was correctly pointed out earlier in this thread that sound is a personal preference. My personal preference has evolved into cheapie Summit house brand Turbo mufflers in a size or two larger than the pipes they're installed on. I use pipe reducers to put larger than the pipe size Turbo's on a dual exhaust system. They have a great sound and make about the best flow that you can get from a muffler that actually (get this) muffles the sound.

This setup has a great growl to it, but will let those poor folks buried in the ground at the cemetary continue their rest.

 

IMHO, this is the perfect recipe for excellent flow and great sound with a 460.

-Big Single (3.5-4")

-Straight thru style muffler
(E.G. magnaflow, dynomax, most aftermarket diesel mufflers)

-Get rid of the cat!

-Pick up a used Diesel tailpipe (about 3.5" and stainless in most cases) or bump up to a new 4" mandrel bent aftermarket system designed for a diesel.

 

Oh how things change over the years! Back in the fifties, sixties and seventies, any car with a single exhaust of any description was laughed out of town, or at least out of the car guy circles.

A dual exhaust offers a deeper tone, and with correct size pipes, adequate flow.

So do your zipperhead rice rockets have quiet pipes?I cant think of anything more obnoxious than some punk kid running 40mph in 1st gear at 13,000 rpm with a $400 coffee can exhaust with some bullshi* chinese symbols on it.Rather here a bigblock or a Harley with loud pipes anyday.
