Fuel Filter Removal Question

My 88 F250 has a water trap on the bottom of the filter... Does it just unscrew from the filter before or after you remove the filter?? Also, I tried to loosen the filter with a strap wrench and it started to collapse... Do they make a metal band type wrench big enough for this filter?? Couldn't find one at Schucks/O'Reilly Auto Parts....

You can get a metal strap filter wrench that fits these, it's what I use. Grip the filter near the top edge seam to avoid crushing it. I remove the base after the filter is off the truck to avoid a mess of diesel fuel. I put the filter in a vise to hold it then I remove the base.

Great, thanks... New to this engine so wasn't sure, will search more for a bigger metal band wrench... The strap wrench was a waste of money since it didn't work... Kind of thought that might be the case but it was the only thing I could find at the time...

[delete] Remember it's counter clockwise while looking down on it ... [/delete]

[edit] My Bad - Clockwise looking down - as I crawl under the desk [/edit]

If you are looking down on top of it and turn it counter clockwise to loosen it, that would make it a Left Hand thread... So, is it a Left Hand thread and not a Right Hand thread like oil filters??

It is standard right hand thread, just like the oil filter (at least mine is).

I fought with strap wrenches, filter wrenches etc for years, finally broke down and bought a big pair of channel lock pliers, and can't say I've had a filter fight since. Of course with me it's a short fight until the hammer and chisel come out to drive them off with anyway!

when you are looking down at it, you turn it clockwise. NOT counter clockwise.

and you should be able to use your strap type wrench, just use it as far to the top as you can get it, thats where the cap is crimped, very strong. and ya, take the bottom water trap piece off after you get the filter off....

Well, that's what I thought... Looking down on the top, clockwise, and looking up from the bottom counter clockwise to loosen... I had it right, its just stuck... So, got to get heavier with it...
