If I were you I would steer clear of that auction, apparently they are banking on a sucker born every minute claiming that tans is a top loader....HaHaHa! Yeah a toploader with two shift levers on the SIDE.. that's funny. I have four or five of those transmissions, you can have one and pay the shipping if you want it...

What's wrong with it having the levers on the side? The only thing top loader means is the gears go in from the top.

The top-loaded "303" all synchro box is a good trans, and was installed behind almost every engine Ford sold during it's run.

It looks similar to the "top loader" four speed.

More info here:

Hmm, well, I guess I could be wrong, but it doesn't look right to me, plus ads for parts with rat in the title are just riding a trend anyway....

RAT is part of the Ford ID number. Look at the link 85e150six4mtod posted above. I understand and agree with you on the over use of rat in the description of old auto parts, but this time it is legit.

Wasn't there an overdrive unit that bolted to the front in between the bell-housing and body?

Not on my 69. It was just a 240ci w/3 speed.

There are aftermarket ODs that work that way:

Ranger Overdrive

but not factory.

Ford (and every other mfg) used to put OD units on the tail of three speeds. Fords units were sold up until the '70s IIRC, and used a BW three speed, not the 303. Numberdummy can tell you more about that.

The Borg Warner T-85N 3 speed manual w/Overdrive was an option on 1965/71 F100's. This trans does not have a 1st gear syncro. The T-85N's overdrive unit bolts to the rear of the trans.

The RAT trans in question, according to the ebay ad, came from a 1968 F100. There were FIVE different RAT's used in these specific trucks:

RAT-G1 (300/360 114" W.B.) / RAT-H1 & J1 (300/360 131" W.B.) / RAT-V (390 114" W.B.) / RAT-W (390 131" W.B.)

RAN's were used with 240's.

The Ford Type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh was introduced in 1963 and initially used in F100/250's & Custom/Galaxies & Fairlanes/Meteors with V8 engines. Its last year was 1986.

Thanks Bill.
BTW I am not trying to fool anyone. I am just trying to clear my garage of stuff I will not use. Plus if someone here could use it I would rather let them have it at a low price hopefully as seen with the low list price.
