I am wanting to swap out the stock rotors and pads for a set of cross drilled and slotted rotors and ebc green stuff 600 series pads. The problem is I can't get the old rotors off! I have unbolted the calipers and removed them and placed them on the leaf spring. Undid the parking break cable off both sides to relieve the PB and beat all around the rotor with a hammer and the rotors are not budging! Any help would be great.

Did mine last fall and it just takes a bit of pounding. They will just pop off in no time

 

my dad just all of his on his 04 screw 4x4 and all came off with ease. they were all orig rotors

 

If you are able to rotate the rotor it is not the handbrake binding, if it is sticking you can find a rubber bung at the 6 oclock position in the backplate, behind you are able to flick the adjuster for the handbrake, it works both ways so by mistake you could be flicking it the wrong way which will lock the rotor completely.
If you feel the hand brake is not at fault it is rusted between the half shaft with the wheel lugs (studs) on it and the rorotr itself, dose it in diesel or WD40 and leave overnight, smacking it will buckle it so be careful.

 

Use a bigger hammer...........

 

I've found spraying a good penetrating oil (I like PB Blaster) on it and hammering away has worked for me. It may take more than one application of the oil.

 

if it just refuses to come off, visit your local parts store. most rent out special tools for free...or just a few bucks.


get a slide hammer. use the hook attachment and knock that puppy off there.

 

i had the same dliema.... i was lucky i just put new pads ,but this fall i WILL be taking the old rotors off... if your lucky enough to live in a snowy area (im in central ontario) the rotors will be a bitch... heat the buggers up and beat them... like i said... i never got mine off... but i also only had a small propane torch.... next time i will be heating them up with oxy/acl, or worse case scenario... cutting them.....

I finaly got it. They were just a very tight fit around the center hub.

 

Anyone ever use the caliper to push the rotor off? I just tried it and it works great.

I have seen the video posted above, but the rear brackets and bolts on my truck are different(It would require a 1/4" or so bolt, and I was not replacing my disk)

I just removed the outer brake pad, then removed the slide pins and boots. Then I bolted the caliper back on with a 5/8 socket as a spacer in between the caliper and the bolt. Then I hit the brake pedal and POP it was free.

 

Thanks for posting this method for removing rear rotors. Worked like a charm and made for easy work.
