ham help

I just got my general license last year. Go to ARRL.org, this is the main site for information. You do have to take the test in person but there are many clubs across the country "usually in you county" that give the test, and also classes. If for some reason you can't find someone in your area to help you, contact your counties emergency manager. He is usually in close contact with local hams that can get you on the right track.
P.S study for the technical and general test together, you more than likely pass both at the same time and doesn't cost anymore.

hope this helps,
