Do you mean the trans will not shift into those gears, or do you mean when you shift into them it's like it's in neutral?

Does it make any noise when you do that?

The best thing you can do is remove the shifter and pull the carpet back which will reveal a big inspection plate bolted to the floor. Take that off, and there is your trans. The M5OD has a big top cover that you can remove and then you can see all the gears and such. Be sure it is in neutral when you remove the top cover, BTW. This will allow you to inspect the gears and also the shift forks.

The most common failure in these transmissions is the shift pins which are in the top cover where the shifter goes in. However, your problem does not sound like that.

It sounds like worn-out forks to me. Do you rest your hand on the shifter when you drive it? Pulling the top cover will tell the tale.

BTW if it has five forward gears, it's a 5 speed.
