Premium or Full Synthetic?

Just hit 3,000 miles on the 2010 Screw. The oil is looking pretty dirty, so I'm ready to do the first oil change. The manual says to use 5W20, either Premium Synthetic or Full Synthetic.

Recommendations? What are you guys using?

Any way to determine what kind of oil the factory put in?

Personally, I use Castrol 5W20 full synthetic, and change the oil and filter every 5000 miles. I have used this schedule for my last 3 trucks, all well over 100,000 miles and never any engine problems.

I use full synthetic as well on my truck. It might cost a little bit more, but it's a better oil.

If you choose to run it 3K miles then do dino and if you do 5K oil change intervals (like myself) then go with synthetic.

Also, don't plan on switching back and forth between the two (seals/gaskets etc), and go buy your oil at Walmart in the 5 qt jugs and save yourself a few bucks.

Spend as much as you want on any oil that meets the Ford spec listed in the manual. But put nothing in that's less what the owner's manual requires. That's 5w20 synthetic blend.

If you use the recommended oil, change the oil at least every 7500 or as soon as every 5000. Check the maintenance guide for determining the oil change interval.

MC 5w20 syn blend is cheap and available at most Walmarts as are MC filters.

The factory fill was Motorcraft semi synthetic... Pretty decent stuff but I still use Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synpower. My Mustang gets Royal Purple but that can get real pricey quick.

I use Ford 5-20 semi and have not had a problem. I change the oil based on gallons of fuel, not milleage. When I hit the end of my log page, I change it. Typically that is 350-400 gallons. During the summer months I tow a lot, so changes come much sooner.

Last truck had 180k on it, never added oil between changes or anything else to the engine. Original plugs, belts, coolant, etc. Felt guilty at one point and changed the trans fluid around 140k.

I changed mine at 2,600 miles it was black as can be - It looked like oil I had removed from a motor with 15,000 miles not 2,600 !! Well when you look at the stock oil filter it is smaller so it filters less and the stock air filter is 1 inch smaller than replacement. so that explains the dirty oil.

I use factory ford blend 5-20 & will change oil /air /& oil filter every 3k. sometimes I change the Air Filter every 60 days and that REALLY keeps the oil looking like new. Think about it it is the only way dirt can get in the motor.

I used that Motorcraft Semi-synthetic on my wifes Escape in 5W-20 I think. Seems to work fine and is priced rite.
I ordered an F150 and will probably have the Ford Dealer change it for me, and use whatever they recomend. It is a company truck and they pay for the oil changes, so I am not laying on my back and changing that one. They told us not to do it anyway. Liability and all that stuff.

just follow the manual. the oil of today is way better than even the "best" stuff from 10 yrs ago

keep a good maintenance pattern going and the truck will last you for years of trouble-free use.

I fail-safe sooner on the mileage, but I also drive alot harder than most.

5w20 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend (red/white bottle) at Walmart. It's cheap, works great and is factory recommended. Motorcraft FL-820s oil filter

wow...your poor vehicle. plugs are a 15,000 to 30,000 mile thing on most vehicles. even the super whamadyne ones in the 5.4 3v are only good for 100,000 miles
