2004 ranger inner tie rods
I need help with this one please! I have a 04' Ranger that has a noise that I could only describe as a CV joint noise but the truck is a rear wheel drive? When I lie under the front of the truck & pull down on the bumper there is a small clunking noise from the tie rod end (I believe). When I hold the tie rod I can feel the clunk & I'm quite sure it is coming from the inner end, but it is covered by a rubber boot. My question is....what lies under that rubber boot & does anyone have a photo with the boot removed? Thanks to all ahead of time! Cheers, Discer

There's a ball joint on each end of the tie-rod. If one end is worn, then both ends probably are. Have someone move the steering wheel back & forth while you crawl around underneath and put your hand on the joints. That should help you narrow it down. It's very possible that the lower ball joints are worn, also. They seem to go faster than the uppers. I had to replace mine as 75k.

Glad to know I am not the only one going crazy trying to find source of a clunking noise in front end suspension of a 2003 2WD Ranger. I will pay a $50 reward to anyone who gives me info that leads to a fix. If anyone has definitively found a cause of the problem, please email me at Lundyusa@Gmail.Com. My Ranger has exact same symptoms: A very annoying clunking rattle coming from front driver's side suspension, mostly noticable in warm weather and louder at slow speeds on bumpy terrain. Feels like something is about to fall off the suspension at slow speed. I have taken it to several repairs shops, no one can find source of the problem with any certainty. I have replaced the front shocks, tightnened bearing packs and replaced upper control arm bushings, but noise and clunking noise at slow speeds is still there. I will send $50 to the first person who gives me info that leads to a fix. Thanks, Joe
