I checked out our local food store and they had white vinegar in two strengths. Regular was 5% acidity and extra strength which was 9% acidity. I got a gal. of each and will give them a try. I know that when I worked in the environmental field, we were call out to the Pace plant (maker of Pace Pecante Sauce) to clean up a spill of high strength vinegar, it had eaten up the asphalt parking lot. After the clean up we had to cut out the asphalt and repave the area covered by the spill. I'm sure they used a higher strength vinegar than is avail. to normal consumers. Some powerful stuff.

Hey guys, just a warning. DO NOT get this stuff on your hands, especially when its murky like mine. My hand is still a little tingely. If thats a word. haha. I am still amazed at how well it works, and that no one knows about it. Never too old to learn something new eh?

will vinegar dissolve gaskets? I was thinking about running it threw my jetski to remove some of the salt/calcium/corrosion deposits in the cooling system but don't want it to eat through the seals.

So far as the gell question goes. Try mixing in some gelatin. You can buy it in the same isle they have the vinegar. Might work, might not, but don't know.

Another possible idea: soak down the area and lay a garbage bag over it. That will help hold on the vinegar, and prevent it from evaporating.
They actually talked about it just last weekend on Spike TV's Trucks. They said it worked great for small parts that you can soak.

Ahh. I never can catch Trucks on TV anymore and don't have a DVR. Last I remember it was on Sunday mornings anyway, which is sort of a busy time of the week for me.

I'm interested to hear how the gell worked out. That'd make treating the Merc easier.

I picked up some vinegar this weekend. We'll see how she does on my rust issues. I'll try and post some pics up once I get something done.

At 48 hours, I pulled it out, and used a rag to wipe it down. That cleaned it up. I put it in for another 24 hours just to see if it would do any more. So the After pic is at 72 hours. I just dropped a 351W 4v intake into it now.

I've been using regular vinigar in a spray bottle, applyed it to my frame and cross members and you could see the rust running down. I happened to let it dry over night (because it got too late). Next day I wire brushed ( cupped brush on grinder) The result was remarkable, it all came out shiney metal. Even the old paint was gone.

And to think my wife said to do this cuz she read it on a helpful hints for the home place.
