1963 f600

hello all here are the numbers off my warranty tag
F60CG351214
WB:156 color : J mod: F602 body: 81a trans:F axle: F2 max gross:19500, 135 hp , rpm:3800 DSO: 55

my question is what is DSO what tranny do I have? and rear axle? Max gross is 19500 am running 24000 plates so all should be good there just do not want to go over 19500 the truck has a 16 foot flat bed and grain sides with a twin cylinder hoist on it . needs front tires to pass inspection and some lights fixed but runs and drives speedo does not act right, when switching between high and low rear axle , how does this work to make speedo correct, looks like it just is in low shows 40 when you are going 60 or (son following me home said I was going 60)

looking through glove compartment found original sales slip 3100.00 new dont know if that included the bed ? PO traded in a 55 gmc with bed for a whole 350.00,

Regarding the speedo: Our '58 was identical as far as running gear. The switchover for the speedo was in the speedo head. It started to get "sticky" after my dad had the truck for a while. A couple of taps on the speedo glass would get it to shift over. Later on, it wouldn't budge.

If you feel up to pulling the instruments, MAYBE you can see what it's all about back there and MAYBE there is a replacement part to make it work.

My guess is Numberdummy would know that part if it exists and where to get it if it's still available.

OR call a speedo shop if there is such a thing near you. I guess they still exist, the google search turned up dozens like this:

Howdy, thats pretty cool about the original invoice, in the glove box for 47 years.

Dunno about the speedo, I haven't had to screw with mine, I would think there should be a box either on the trans or the speedo to compensate for the ratio change between high and low.

Got any Pics??

The truck was sold at a dealer in Iowa will look at sales slip, it was sold on nov 8 1963 so it sat around for a year on the lot, will have to pull speedo out and look at back when you switch it jumps to 80-90 or so then goes back to 40 or what it was before you shift,my most pressing issue is the front tires , does any one know why the front axle is so narrow? and also how to post pics? have a few of the ruff stuff on the truck, that I emailed to my Dad , how do you get power steering on these old things or am I stuck with stongarm steering?

Mine does the jump to 70/80 when shifting from low to high but then settles back down and reads correctly.

As far as posting pics the easiest way is to use upload your photos to photobucket.com. (free) then copy paste the image code to your post.

It seems odd to me that while the truck was assembled in November 1962, it sat on the lot for a year before selling in November 1963.

I'll betcha the salesman wrote down the year it was sold wrong..AND it was really sold in November 1962.

November 1962 serial number range: 350,000 thru 359,999. This truck would have been the 1,214th unit assembled in November 1962.

speedo error, If its showing 40 at 60 that means the little electric transmission is stuck
in low range. reach under the dash disconnect the speedometer cable, disconnect the
electric wire on it and unscrew in from the speedometer (dont loose the drive tang).
Try and get some WD40 in it, then bench test it. With 12v jumpers ground the case
then put 12v to the terminal it should then click. Then spin it by hand touching the
terminal and the other end will go slower or go the same speed while jumping the terminal. They usually get gummy. If it doesnt click or work just connect the cable to
the speedometer with out it, but you have to tie the two wires together and tape it.
Now it will show road speed with axle in high. but low range will read faster until you
find a good unit. All electric axles have this little tranny on the speedometer.

Power assist was available on most trucks. It was a manual box with a hydraulic cylinder attached to the steering system. I just junked a setup like that from a C-cab ford. The cylinder was attached to the draglink. Pressure regulator sensed the motion of which way you were turning the wheel and made the cylinder work. I had a 79 F700 with that system, except the cylinder was attached to the frame on the passenger side, and it connected to the right front wheel.
I have 4 6-lug bud rims for an F600 if anyone's interested. tubeless rims.

Your front axle may not be as narrow as you think. It may be that your fenders are universal for those F-series trucks. So they were used for the bigger trucks too. So with smaller tires and axles, you kinda have a bloated look to the front end.

I'm in Cleveland, Ohio
2 of the rims are from a U-Haul truck. 8X22.5 I still have the tires with them. They are weather checked. but held air. U-Haul used the skinnier tires to limit how much weight you put on their trucks. The other 2 rims are 9X22.5 They were all mounted on a 1955 REO truck chassis. It used timken axles, which are the same as what was used on an F600. Anyone need any axles too? I'm gonna part this truck out.
