69 f100 column grinds and misses first gear

my f 100 360 3 speed manual on the column grinds and bumps out of first on take off about 25% of the time, mostly it does good. This sucks at lights or pulling out on a busy road. I have to slowly engage the clutch to make sure it has "caught" before i take off ( if theres time ). any body had this experience, and have a clue ? I think the tranny is good, but i am all ears for advice. I dont want to change to an automatic or lose the original column set up if i can help it. I just wanna fix it original.
