Angry Clogged high pressure pump??? Really?

Ive had my 2008 F250 since it was brand new. Its got only 36400 miles on it and has been trouble free except for an EGR valve and some little minor issues that I wouldnt have worried about if it wasnt under warranty. I took it to the dealership Wednesday because it had an engine light on. The truck ran fine still, I drove it in, drove great, no issues. The dealer called me this morning and said that it had a low fuel rail pressure code in it. He wanted to change the filters but I told him that they only had 1000 miles on them, but I understand if they need to rule that out first. I called him back this afternoon to see how they were comming on the truck, they said that they had ran some tests and now it would not even start. Great. So he called back after a few more hours and said it needs a fuel rail pressure sensor and the high pressure fuel pump is clogged so it needs that too, of course not coverd under warranty. Now I dont work on Ford or International engines but I do work on HPCR Deere engines every day and first I have never seen an HPCR high pressure fuel pump that is clogged, the filters on these engines are waaaay to fine to allow enough trash to clog the pump. Second, how does it need a sensor and a pump, you would think one or the other right? Any Ford techs or any owners out there that can make me feel better..... or worse?

thats crazy i would tell them to try the sensor first and see if it runs. i canged my fuel filters a month ago for the first time of me owning the truck(170,000kms) and the rail filter had FF on it from the factory so hard to think that the pump is clogged but i stand to be corrected.

How often have you changed your fuel filters?

Why is this not under warranty? I must agree with you about the pump being "clogged". Sounds like B.S to me. They tell you it's clogged so it sounds like it's your fault. That way they make you look negligent and liable. Good luck to you. Sounds like you are about to do battle......

something stinks here. If you are changing per specs and prove it and the pump or a sensor is failing then that is warranty. They don't know it is a clog, just that it is not pumping per spec's.

They need to do the sensor first. I think I would be getting old Ford on the phone..it is not the dealers call to so no warranty.

Well thanks for the opinions on this. Thats what I told them to do yesterday when he said it needed the pump, lets put the sensor on and see what it does. Ive seen rail pressure sensors make an engine not start. Next point, like he said, HOW do you know the pump is clogged, when more than likely they havent even pulled it off of the truck yet???? Its had 3 sets of filters in 36400 miles plus the factory set, I would say thats plenty of filter changes.

Also in reply to why its not covered...... I think they got it becuase its "clogged with debris" that sounds like the dealer has decided that to me. As a service tech, if we have a customer who has messed up, a lot of times I can still let warranty pay for it because you dont tell them these details.... maybe the pump just faied, it may be wrong to do that, but its customer service......

Yeah..sounds like they want you to pay vs your warranty. I would not take that lying down because that would be a cab off repair.

Cab off repair.......... now this sounds really funny.... He told me they could have it done on Monday and it would cost $550. Does this sound correct?

No way is that correct. The pump costs at least that. Then there's labor.... Somebody is full of "you know what"! They're definitely not telling you everything that's going on. Call the Ford customer service # and maybe your local better business bureau.

Well we changed our mind today, now its the pump in the lower filter base that is clogged, not the high pressure pump. Makes a little more sense to me, I guess that pump is pre filter. Doesnt look very hard to replace, anybody been there yet?

ahhh the fuel/water separator....a warranty item in the end is probably gonna be the case. I think I would let ford know this $550 issue. Sounds like fraud and you call them on it and they knew it.

Sounds like a complaint to ford to me on this...may take a day or two since it is the weekend.

Is there a pump in the housing on the frame?

I thought there was a tank mounted pump and then a high pump...?
