Directional Turn Signals

Hey everyone!

My 53 F100 has a 6 volt system. I bought a universal turn signal sytem (mounts on the steering wheel) for the truck (from LMC) but apparently it's for a 12 volt system. A friend told me it would still work but I'm not convinced. Any comments?

Short of changing out the electrical system to make it 12 volt (I'd like to leave it original...6 volt), does anyone know if there is a turn signal system that will work on 6 volts?

I don't mind sticking my arm out the window to indicate which way I'm turning but at night I'm afraid I might lose the arm!

Thanks in advance!!

Are you using a 6 volt or 12 volt flasher with your turn signal switch?

Thanks "bailegb" for the prompt reply.

I haven't bought the flasher yet...does someone make a 6 volt flasher or will I run into the same "wall" trying to find one?

It should work with the 6V system if the wires are not too small. You can get a 6V flasher from most any of the parts houses. Are your parking lights set up for dual contact bulbs? If not you will have to change the bulb socket or mount additional lights for the blinkers. The switch that I bought had a light on the end of the handle and it said the only thing that I needed to do was change the bulb to 6V for it to work on the 6V system.

Like gdgerland said, as long as the wire size is sufficient to carry the current, the switch itself doesn't care how many volts you stuff through it. 6 volt loads will pull approximately double the current of a corresponding 12 volt load. It should be fine, though. Light bulbs don't pull much at all. As long as the wire isn't smaller than 16 guage (and I doubt it is), it will handle it. The things you need to change for it to work on 6V are the indicator bulbs if it has them and the flasher.

Thanks Gil & Blue!

I'll check out the bulbs & get a 6V flasher.
