Help on 97 - 2000 4.0 Cam Sensor Swap
I have a 97 4.0 engine that I am putting in a 2000 ranger that had a 4.0 as well. I am having trouble with the cam sensor and making sense of it.
The shaft housings on both have the same part number but the triggers are different looking.
97
2000
The 2000 is missing the actual pickup so I cannot compare them. the one I bought to fit the harness is a 2 pin style listed as late 99 from Borg Warner. The 97 uses a 3 pin and the 2000 model after the one I bought is also 3 pin.
My question is, can I use the 97 housing and trigger with the new cam sensor I bought or do I have to switch the housings. Will the 97 fit in the 2000, and what is the procedure for getting the trigger lined up if I swap them?
Thanks in advance.

Just to finish out this thread. The 2 pin stator is a Variable Reluctance design and was limited to a few years. And the 3 pin is the Hall effect version. a 3pin sensor will not work on a 2 pin synchronizer. I had to pull the old one and replace it with the VR style synchronizer as that is what my PCM was using for a signal.
