Oil cooler question

The oil cooler on my 7.3 IDI sprung a leak this week. Trying to weld the pinhole while still on the truck didn't work out too well (couldn't get it clean enough to get a tack over the pinhole - kept spurting)...

Looking for a replacement cooling section (headers look to be in good shape). I know I'll need o-rings and gaskets from the stealership.

I found a "late mode 6.9 IDI oil cooler" but the guy doesn't know how many o-rings it takes because it still has the headers attached.

Questions: when did the cooler change from a 6 o-ring setup to a 4 o-ring setup? Even if it is 6 o-rings, would this setup bolt right up to my 7.3 (I'd rebuild to get new o-rings in there if I did this)? Any other advice?

Once you get it apart, you could probably fix it. The 6.9 & 7.3 are the same externally. It should bolt right up.

If corrosion has made a hole........ get a new or good used cooler for a 7.3. Even if they were identical I would use the 7.3 cooler only cuzz its newer.

Sorry to pseudo-hijack the thread, but can I just go to NAPA to get the replacement parts for rebuilding my oil-cooler?

Mine has been leaking for some time and I am getting ready to fix it.

Thanks,
Chris

Here's the parts numbers:

2 - Oil cooler O rings Ford 1C3Z-6K649-BA
2 - Oil cooler O rings Ford 1C3Z-6C610-BA
1 - Oil cooler gasket Ford E3TZ-6A636-G
1 - Oil cooler gasket Ford E3TZ-6A636-H

International part #s (bag of 2 rings)

-thicker ring 1804414C1
-thinner ring 1807563C1

gasket 1804378C2
gasket 1804377C4

Oh!! Also, if you go to International, make sure you get the 'Ford' gasket, and not the International one. Apparently there was a slightly different gasket used on one model of International that they sometimes confuse witht he Ford one, and they are different enough it won't work. (Never saw the different gasket, just going from what the parts guys told me at IH when I recently picked up gaskets and o-rings for a cooler.)

The Felpro kit comes with both for about $4 from AutoZone or AdvAuto so no worries.

Since I enquired at 3-4 auto parts places here about them and got a blank stare or a stunned silence, I just went to IH and they had them individually rather than as a kit. For the two gaskets and 4 O-rings I was just shy of $50 out the door here in Canada. Sigh....

There is a local company that specializes in o-rings that I am rather close with, as soon as get my hands on these o-rings I plan on having them match them up and get me some Vitons.

There is no IH dealer within two hours one way, local Ford dealer doesn't have them and won't look them up, truck is to old ... In their words!

-Enjoy

Do you have an Autozone/Advance Auto Parts P/N?

Thanks,
