cooling system

I HATE This damm ford. the cooling system on this truck is just pissin me off. I have put a new water pump, t stat 160 degree, head gasket, hoses, belts, heater core, new rad, coolant, everything new. Aftermarket summit gauges. okay 1st the truck runs hott like 225 230 it slowly works its way up. and when it gets to 225 i shut it off and can here it sizzle in the rad and it spits out into the overflow. It completely filled the stock overflow and a half gallon jug. What is this thing doing?? the water pump is spinning the right way, i already made that mistake and corrected it. timing is advanced a good bit maybe timing?? i thought retarded timing would run hot? spark plugs are black so i dont believe its running lean. Im stumped, do not know where to go with this

Is any of the fluids coming out brown? I've had issues with lots of rust in the block plugging stuff up.

Are you trying to run it right after all this work? After you drain the system for mechanical work, you need to run it with the radiator cap off, and let it puke out a couple of times to get rid of air in the engine. Sometimes you can take a heater hose off and fill the system up till it runs out the hose, then replace the hose and top it off. It will still have some air in it though.

My brothers hoses were collapsing on him when he had issues with his cooling system. This would be pretty obvious but maybe overlooked.

Please don't be insulted by this, but is it possible that you put the thermostat in backwards?

helpful info from you would be the year & what engine. Before you put these new pieces/parts, was it acting this same way?

"the water pump is spinning the right way, i already made that mistake and corrected it"...could you explain what you mean?

Is this a clutch-type fan? You didn't post if you also replaced Radiator cap. 50/50 antifreeze mix? Belt isn't slipping?

Posting that you HATE your truck isn't helpful.......

ok its a 85 f150 I6. When i say i replaced everything i mean the rad cap too. no my hoses are rock hard and not collapsing. Yes the thermostat is in the right way (copper pelat into engine). and what i mean when i said i corrected the pump spinning backwards before is that i put an 89 motor in my truck and made it carb. I figure i put a 89 pump on it but wasnt thinking because it (89 motor) had a serp belt on it and i reused my v belt system which spun the pump backwards. so i put the right pump on it for an 85 and corrected that issue. This is not rocket science, nothing makes me pull my hair out more than parts that are brand new that fail after a week. example is that water pump if thats what it ends up to be is not even 1 month old so in my mind its good. I had the old water pump thats been on my old motor since 1985 with no problems. i just dont get it with this truck

it is possible my timing is too advanced because i have a ping at 3000 rpm. possible but not yet confirmed i hope i answered all your questions and hope you can help me out getting this back up and runnin

If you have a ping, your timing is too advanced or due to carbon buildup you might try
a higher octane fuel to see if that helps eliminate the ping. I would check the manual
or specs on the decal in the engine comparment to see what is the stock timing for
both a 1985 and 1989 I6 and set it close to that.

What has not been discussed is whether or not the ignition system is original? The 1984-1986 F150 with 4.9L engine had the feedback system, where the computer controlled the ignition advance. If this has been replaced (?) and the EGR disabled, pinging is not uncommon until the timing curve has been reworked or the initial timing retarded a bit.

the ign system is a ds2 i got rid of the eec-iv system when i removed emission components. i got the module with the blue gromment. However i may have got the wrong dist. I got a dist for a 85 with vac advance. dont know if thats wrong, i mean the truck runs and all but will the wrong dist have an effect on my overheating. If i put the timing at 10 degrees advance the truck runs like crap. i was looking at getting a dist from this company called performance distributors down in memphis, they will custom tailor a dist to fit your engine. i dont know what do you guys think. im pretty set on my problem being timing way to advanced. if my timing marks are correct when i had a light on it the timing was at like 25btdc obviously way way advanced. that should be my total timing not intial?

With the engine swap & pump correction etc, is the fan now the correct one for the current rotation too?
Fan clutches are also made in right or left hand rotation versions, so need to match the application.

These might not be the problem/s, but worth checking.

I pretty much agree, I have a hard time seeing wrong timing affecting the temperature so much,
it seems to me something else is wrong somewhere.

Your timing will be at 25btdc if you do not disconnect the vacuum advance while checking it, and you have vacuum on the hose to the dist.
