Looking for hand crank, '48 226

Looking for a hand crank for my 226. They all look like they have similar ends. Does anyone have a part number or would a crank from say the year before or so work?

Thanks

According to my Ford parts catalog, the crank is used from 48-52, p/n 40 17036, and is used with an extension, p/n 51A 17040, 26.4" long, which was later replaced with a 31" version, p/n 59A 17040. Will cranks from earlier vehicles work? Probably. I believe these parts have a far greater application than I have listed in my simple truck parts book. As long as it fits in the hole and can reach the crank hook, you should be good to go. Enjoy your cranking!

Hummm.......lets see, what is the best way to show my ignorance? My '50 with a 226 has a hole in the lower grill bar for a crank, but, looks like it is for decoration only. Unless you have a hole in your radiator you can't get a crank to the engine. This is not to mention that the crank shaft pully does not have anything to couple with the hand crank anyway. Am I missing something here?

The damper pulley might have a serrated bolt holding it in, I've had quite a few that didn't. There is a indentation on the bottom of the stock radiator to allow the crankshaft pass through between the radiator and radiator frame. There is also a bracket welded or riveted to the radiator frame.

They're hard to find and worth big bucks. My truck came with one that was apparently for an older car, not long enough, so it was extended with a piece of bar. The dog on the end must have broken off, so they welded a bolt in its place, and it's pretty chewed up. My engine is from a '51 car, doesn't have the matching nut on the crank. (it's been rebuilt, no doubt was replaced by a regular bolt).

People who've used them swear it's pretty easy to flip a V8 over, I've never had any desire to find out.

Me neither, that's why my trucks have batteries

The word 'swear' is an understatement!

Back is the old days, broken arms were so common when using hand cranks, that the saying at that time was: "Old dobbin never kicked like this critter!"
