need advice for my 7.3 idi

hi guys iam the new owner of a 1993 f250xlt extcab 4x4 with a 7.3 idi and a zf5 it hasn't run since 2018 an the wiring is a mess i got it to light off this morning but i believe i have bad glow plugs and the previous owner passed away and his son let it sit and get vandalized and tried to get it to start so its got a manual glow plug relay system that works but it barley wants to start and dies immediately after starting it does need new return line o rings as they leak like crazy it has a new lift pump and injection pump but would the o rings cause it to die after start up or is it something else

If the leak is so bad that you can tell the return lines leak, that air intrusion will make starting the truck and keeping it reliably running neigh impossible. At this point, your glow plugs could be working fine, but the air intrusion could be preventing success.

This video is a great starting point for new owners -

What brand is the glow plug?

It also looks swolen..

Only replace with motor craft zd-9 any other plug will swell and ruin your motor..

if it says beru germany, that is a true motorcraft plug.
you can get the proper motorcraft ZD9 glowplugs from rock auto for around $8.50 each.

My 89 still has the oem caps on it, imho they're better than any of the replacement ones. I always keep some extras around from used engines for spares on my 85 as they're aftermarket and once a year it never fails one will swell and not seal..

eBay has a "made in Germany" kit for pretty fair, maybe those are better.

You can also order those #111 in viton online pretty cheap. Most go to McMaster Carr? I think it is. I get them on eBay for roughly 10$/50 of them with free shipping just because I already have an account there..

If you want to crank it before the glow plugs come in to see if you fixed the air intrusion issue or need the truck, don't touch the glowplugs and just give it a whiff of ether. It doesn't take much, be easy on it and it won't hurt it.

Ether isn't the enemy, the man behind the can is...

If you still have air intuition, check the filter head as the ones with the heater in them (7.3 style) are known to leak, also the little short piece of hose at the mechanical fuel pump.

And if you don't know the condition of the shower heads (pickup boot) in the tank don't let it get below or even close to 1/4 or you'll run out of fuel...

Best of luck to ya, whatever wrenching you do, as long as you're willing it beats the hell out of a payment..nothing like something you actually own

Wise idea,

Make sure the sending units don't have any pinholes in them. Also a good time to do the "harpoon mod" so your tanks fill easy. Not sure if it was an issue on 87+ but it was one the 83-86.

I wouldn't spend too much time on the cleaning if they look good.

If nothing else you know the motor runs, and the 4wd zf5 is worth good money. You could part it out and maybe make your money back or even then some depending on what you paid.
