Thanks for the tip on the heater hoses. I'll look at them in the morning. Stu

Ross - Does yours have the indented areas around each of the holes. I didn't check the bolt size, but would guess the insert (is stanchion the correct term?) takes something like a 5/16 x 24 bolt.

Yes indeed. Heater hose locations are different '51 vs. '52. Below are pics. Also, going back to the pic of the 215 firewall and linkage, you can see in that pic the two blanking plugs that are still in place where the V8 linkage would have otherwise been mounted. The first pic is heater hose location on a '51, then the '52. Looks like solenoid location is different too. Stu

new old question
Hey Folks,
This vin number business has me wondering on my truck as well.
Glove box says 51, hood and upper valence some say is 52.
the heater hose run and a few other suggestions kinda confusing as to what I've got.
I know my Trucks been fiddled with, so I need to search the frame for a vin stamping. Does anyone have any photos of where to search withtout having to clean the whole frame?
My Frame old flaky paint needs scraping yes, but didnt really want to get into that just yet.
From what I've read so far, either driver or passenger side frame rails,
but would that be in the engine bay side or the outside of the frame?
by the shock mounts?
Just curious, and not wanting to start a 3rd leg of this project before I get done a few things first....(trying not to make same mistake I did on the 66 Mustang, in 3 months I had that thing in buckets of parts!)
Thanks yall.

A quick way to differentiate 51 and 52 is to look at the frame struts where the engine mounts sit. Look here:

Well that confirms it then I've got a 51 at least by these pictures.
Crazy thing is,
Glove box vin starts: F1R1 (hi number 24xxx range consec unit #)
Frame stamp says : F1R2 (very low 13xxx consec unit #)
Maybe I have a Late 51 build that used some 52 parts?
a prev wrecked truck that was rebuilt? WHO KNOWS.
I dont have it in front of me but If my glove box vin tag is original to the truck, I wonder if the build production code would put a time frame on it?
anybody know how to decipher those?
Seems If I rem correctly Ford gave the months of the year a "letter" code system.
Like: "K" for november or somthing......
And my Ford parts manual I have shows my Vin tag and states that Sept 51 the Vin tag changed to represent the one in the books photo.
So my guess if all is correct to the truck I'm ballparking Sept, Oct build.
Not sure when they actually flipped over to 52 production, heck I'm still
trying to take it all in that I've started yet another project!!
the Mystery continues!
Thanks all,
T

My old Brit car friends would call it a "bitsa". Bits of this one, bits of that one. The frame number is what matters. The glove box tag is easy to move from one truck to another. Nothing unusual, pretty much every restored/refurbished truck out there has been helped by one or more donors. To me what matters is that the paper matches the frame. You can get replacement glove box tags from places like A.G. Backeast. I got one from him for the truck in my signature block. Stu
