460/370? Crank #'s or other ID?
Bought a 86 F250 cheap & my buddy said it had a 460, the door tag said it should be a 460 but the valve cover has a 370 sticker & the only number I saw on the crank was 1VAB, rods were C9AE, block is D9 & I couldn't see the numbers where I usually see them on the heads....
Isn't a 460 crank suppose to be 2Y or 3Y something, or did this change with 79 & up...
Anything else I should look for so I don't have to take the head off & measure the bore & stroke(what should it be for a 370??)
I sure could use some help, I'd really like to do a mild build on this if it is a 460 with all the great info in this forum...
Thanks

460/370? Crank #'s or other ID?
I found this info on a rebuilders website:
1979-91 370 HD
Block Code: D9TE-BB
Head Codes: E9TE-FA, D6TE-FA, E8TE-FA
Crank Code: 1VAB
(Spec. if Head is 2 Barrel or 4 Barrel)
and this info from another's:
Truck is VIN Code H.
79-85 2 BARREL CARB. TRUCK. CASTING# D9TE-FA
79-4/85. TRUCK. 4 BBL CARB. CASTING# D9TE-HADFC1!!
5/85-90 COMP ENG TRUCK ONLY! 2 OR 4 BARREL CARB.
5/85-90. 2 OR 4 BARREL CARB. E6TE-FA, GA
I thought the 370 crank would have been the same as the 429HD crank, but found these codes for the 429 on the rebuilder's site:
429
Block: D9TE-AB
Heads: D9TE-FA, D9TE-HA, E5TE-HA, E6TE
Crank: D9TE-EA 1979-85 429 V-8 H.O., Truck Only, 1 3/4" Crank Neck
What I would REALLY like to know is if 370 rods are the same length as 429 rods? Or are they unique?
Could the 370 use the same pistons as a 390/391? They are the same bore.
