1948-1952 Mercury M-1 tailgate - THE H.A.M.B.

 

I have to agree that it is a later Mercury tailgate. The early ones made use of a Mercury plate that was spot welded onto a Ford tailgate. A rectangular opening was cut out of the tailgate which removed the Ford name from the tailgate. The Mercury name plate was spotwelded into the opening. You can turn an early Ford tailgate into a Merc tailgate if you have the Mercury plate which is what I have to do as my tailgate was junk but the Mercury plate is usable.

Hey Greg, I doubt that the Mercury weld in plate is available as NOS or repro, but have you ever seen them at swap meets? Thanks.

It is funny that this came up, my gate (cdn '51) has the block ford letters on it and I would like to have the script, never thought of the merc, but I am going to try and find a wrecked script gate and cut it out and put it into the ford block letter one. Just like ford did with the merc!

 

I'll just bet you couldn't. LOL If I was there, I'd have offered $76.

 

The other thing that's different about the later Merc gates is the center (centre?) panel is wider to accommodate the extra letters. That makes it a little more difficult to modify a Ford gate into a Mercury.

 

Indeed they are wider. Just looked through my pictures of my three tailgates. I have two Mercury (one is missing the letters) and one Ford.

 

Yes Old F1 the Mercury plates do show up from time to time but not like it was. A went to one of the first Ford and Mercury truck nationals and a guy had a stack of 10 on his table. I can't recall his price but should have bought a couple from him. I've got a line on a spare to add to my supplies. But not $75. $100 here in Ontario.
