V10 vs. PSD comparison. WITH VIDEO!

So we went out and did it again. This time we have all 3 PSDs as well as a 2000 V10 truck.

Here are the specifics:

I brought my truck up. It's a 2008 F-250 CC SB 4x4 truck. Powered by the 6.4L PSD and has 3.73 gears and the 5R110 transmission.

Mike(Monster-4) had his 2000 F-250 SC SB 4x4 truck. This one had the 6.8L V10, 3.73 gears and 4R100 transimssion.

Matt(i eat hybrids) brought up his 2006 F-350 SRW CC 4x4 LB truck with the 6.0L PSD. This truck has the 5R110 transmission

I

And finally we have Matt's friend Andrew who brought up his 2001 F-250 CC LB 7.3L PSD truck. This SD has the 4R100 transmission.

And for weight we had my 8.5x24' enclosed car hauler which is 3500 lbs empty.

And we then loaded my Mother in-law's 2003 Isuzu Ascender, which weighs 5,000 lbs.

Inside it we had 800 lbs of topsoil...

And finally we had Matt's 1400-lb Exmark commercial mower.

Total weight, including trailer, was roughly 10,700 lbs.

We also had 800 lbs of wood pellets in the bed of Mike's V10 truck. We figured this would offset the weight difference between his ligher V10 and the heavier PSDs. This load was also in Matt's 06 PSD truck because once Mike left we had nowhere to put it!

We drove each truck around the area and to a hill known as Buffalo Hill. This is the same 15 percent grade we used twice before for comparison purposes. We stopped each truck with trailer at the beginning of the steepest part of the hill. We then did a full throttle launch and recorded each pass, making note of the speeds at different points on the hill.

Here are the videos!

First was my '08 PSD:

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UGbpNBimnfc&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UGbpNBimnfc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

And another pass, recorded from inside the cab:

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OBN4uzt4uFw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OBN4uzt4uFw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

Then we got in Andrew's 2001 F-250 7.3L truck!

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CkCWMv3TaMk&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CkCWMv3TaMk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

During this pass we noticed lots of smoke coming from the dashboard towards the end of the pull. We all had our different guesses as to what it was, but it was apparent something was starting to burn so this was the only pull we made with this truck.

So now we got into Mike's V10 powered truck.
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XuZAVSt73g0&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XuZAVSt73g0&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

We tried it again to see if we could get it to hold 1st through the steepest part of the hill. That 3K RPM upshift to 2nd really hindered performance!

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OzDjRA_uJ1k&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OzDjRA_uJ1k&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

And after not being able to hold 1st gear up to redline, we loaded his 93 octane tow tune to give it a try.

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2HTr8GB_pXI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2HTr8GB_pXI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

Still no luck holding 1st gear! So we tried it again!

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ecOYoQKgEIk&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ecOYoQKgEIk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

At this point Mike had to leave so Matt and myself ran his 2006 6.0L PSD truck.

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xNZsplfrGkc&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xNZsplfrGkc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>

To be honest I was a little disappointed in the 7.3L truck. It seemed to be running as it should, but it was definitely down on power compared to the newer PSDs.

Mike's V10 truck would have done better had it been able to rev above 3,000 RPMs. He's trying to track down the cause for that but his truck isn't going to realize it's full potential until it revs higher than that. This is why we think it didn't pull faster than the 7.3L truck.

Matt's 6.0 really impressed me! It revved more than my 6.4 did, sometimes as high as 3,500 RPMs. Even so it had no trouble maintaining very comparable speeds to my '08 6.4L truck. It may have been down 80 ft-lbs of torque, but when revved up to HP peak it only had 25 less horsepower, which is why it handled the weight so well.

All 4 trucks were definitely capable of handling this much weight. This test represented some of the toughest use most trucks could expect to see. All trucks made it up the hill without a problem even though all trucks were approaching or exceeding their max towing capacity. Mike's V10 truck was actually overloaded by about 1,000 lbs and it did a really great job!

I hope to do this again sometime with more weight and more trucks, we had a blast!

Great test, I am out of rep but I will get you as soon as I can Tom!

My V10/4R100 with 3.73s and LT245s will hold first to 41 and second to 74. Something is off, I agree with the guy that said his ECU has downs.
Really though, you 5R110 guys don't know what its like to be stuck with a 4R100 towing heavy. I would love to see either a 6 speed V10 or PSD do that same pull, it would leave the 4R100 in the dust.

That 7.3 was slower than I thought it would be, and I think everybody can agree that the 2V V10 towed the same load better.
I was also suprised to see that the 6.0 kept up with the 6.4.

Need a 3V V10 with a TS to show that they can keep up with the newer PSD's.

The Texas chapter needs to set one of these up!

Great test but why was it necessary to load the V10 down more? The fact that the psd weighs more should be an advantage to the V10. Pulling equal loads shouldn't include the difference in engine weights.

Otherwise, spectacular job!

The one big turbo design works the same at WOT as the compounds, but the powered launch probably helped kill the turbo lag. The power bands aren't drastically different. Try a dead stop at the bottom of the hill, and even a 6.0 guy like me will say the 6.4 will win.

The Texas chapter needs to set one of these up!
Say where, I'll play.

i'm one of the guys who got a good 2003 6.0 and i mean it's a good bullet proof and fast.i have 168 000 mi on her her now and it still runs like a dream. 2 parts replaced i icp sensor at 155000 and one alternator at about the same time. she still has the original batteries. also i did replace ball joints and the end links, but i started my diesel career with a 6,9 in 83 a7.3 in 88(that one lasted 497000.a1997 that some kid had to have with 202000 miles, but theis 6.0 amazes me. she's like a cruise missle on the highway and i love the s,o. b.

good point actualy..

would have been nice to test the V10 without the added weight penalty.

Couldn't you guys have just manually shifted the V10 into first? Or were you trying to see how the trucks themselves would work things out?

I agree! That was Mike's idea. In the V10 vs. PSD thread someone accused his truck of having an unfair advantage due to it's lighter weight.

So when Matt(i eat hybrids) showed up with his mowers we needed a place to put the pellets I originally had in the trailer. Mike wanted them in his truck so nobody would accuse him of having an unfair advantage.

I tried!!! Unfortunately just a few weeks ago his shifter started getting pretty sloppy and would NOT go into the 1st gear position. I found this out the hard way on the way back down the same 15 percent grade looking for engine braking. There was none to be had in 2nd gear!

Awesome post and great videos of all the trucks. Even though I am a V10 guy I admire the raw power of that 6.4 hauling the trailer like it wasn't there. Hopefully the 7.3 and V10 guys can figure out what's going on with their trucks.
