1989 F250 IDI 7.3L Diesel Injector pump

I am needing to know if a 94 Turbo 7.3L DB2 injector pump will work in my 1989 non-turbo 7.3L engine. They both take DB2 injector pumps but the part numbers are different at the Auto parts store.

I am needing to replace the IP as I have been told by a diesel shop that my existing IP has alot of play and should be replaced.

Thanks in advance for the information.

I'm pretty sure it will work just fine. I think the turbo pump would be a bit of an upgrade for you. I know the turbo pumps are set up with a more aggressive fuel curve and max fuel setting. Would be a good idea to have a pyrometer to monitor your EGT if you do put a turbo pump in.

Can anyone think of a reason this won't work for him?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. But as you said a pyro would be a good idea.

Thanks for the information. I assume the more aggressive fuel curve would also mean it would burn more fuel, thus lower mpg, correct.

I believe I will continue looking for a good used IP or probably bite the bullet and get a new one.

Thanks again, hugger94

hugger,go new man.wear items like GP's,injectors, and IP's are not places you want to skimp on.
with todays fuel prices,it simply doesn't take long to pay back the cost of injectors and IP's.
it sucks, because its a lump sum all at once.but much, much cheaper in the not so long term to go new.
performance and efficiency is so worth the price of new.

I have to know, what exactly is the simptoms or the reason they told you yours has too much play, and how did they check it.

I was getting ****ty mileage and it was smoking alot when you step on it. I took it to the local Injector Diesel shop to have the IP turned up or advanced, I believe it was. The mechanic told me that the IP had alot of play and it already had been advanced by the previous owner.

It as quite smoking so much when I speed up from a stop, just once in a while not every time prior. Still get ****ty mileage 10-12 mpg when my old 84 6.9L with 4 speed got 17-18 mpg on a regular basis.

Hope I remember the advancing the IP correctly but it was over a year ago.

I'm just curious, do you know how he determined this, did he put a timing meter on it or just go by the marks. I'm not saying you don't need a new pump, I would just like to know how he determined it was loose, lots of black smoke means you are getting more fuel than you have air to burn, have you tried turning the fuel down, and or setting the timing with a meter.
