calling all super camper specials

Have you ever seen someone retrofit the spare tire carrier into the side of their bed -- possibly in another 73-79 model year without the larger wheel base or possible in an earlier generation truck?
I am surprised that Ford didn't continue to mount the spare tire on the side like these Super Camper Specials. It's so convenient.

I haven't seen any in my area that someone grafted the spare tire from a super camper to a regular bed. A guy would have to get the bed panels from inside the bed to make the conversion look correct. If it works it would be cool tho. I'm going too have to measure my two trucks just for the curiosity factor

Here's my 78 Camper Special. I bought it as it sits about 1 1/2 years ago. Will eventually be converted to a diesel of some sort, probably 4wd, cab corners replaced (previous owner loaded them with bondo to hide the fact there's no metal there) and give it a full repaint. But I have another project to get to before that, so it will likely be another year before it comes into the shop...

Anyone need SCS box sides? (Not mine - about 1.5 hours from me)

Yes, it may be worth getting running, bought it with the engine seized, managed to get it rolling over, but have antifreeze coming out of the airbox drain. Need to get it into the shop and pull the head off to see what's really wrong.
Could be a tad expensive and I already have one MoneyPit.....LOL

Looks like you have a 3 cylinder, probably a -53 series. Whoever did the install seems to have done a really professional job. Detroits are a higher RPM diesel, not a lot of power on the lower end. IF that is a -51 series, junk it and find a more common -53, or -71. The -51 series had weird poppet injectors that used a small passage in the head to get compression pressure to open the injector. It was extremely troublesome.
The thing about the two stroke -53, -71, and -92 series engines that have been sitting awhile, the fuel rack can stick and cause the engine to run away. An improperly adjusted fuel rack can do the same thing. Make sure you find someone who really knows how to work on the 2 strokes. No technical schools train on them any more. When I went through training they told us we would never see a two stroke and I laughed in their faces because I'm from farm country. These things are everywhere, and yet I have been able to avoid working on one. You may find it more economical to find another engine of the same model and drop it in place. When you start it up for the first time, have the intake off the turbo and have someone with a piece of plywood or a clipboard to slap over the inlet if it starts screaming for drag race RPM. Watch your fingers though.
What is the transmission setup? I know some 3 cylinders came in bread vans that were mated to T18s, but you have dual sticks.
If that is straight piped, everyone will know you are coming for several miles. A big muffler or two will help keep the neighbors happy.
I would be ok with that truck. Enjoy!
