calling all super camper specials

Yes, Ford did make those fiberglass campers for a while, I believe they were labeled, "American Road" and you can see them in the 74 truck brochure. I think you are right that perhaps Starcraft made them for Ford and then ended up not selling hardly any, plus it's my understanding that they were very expensive and had some "issues" because of the molded fiberglass/plastic causing some kind of "gas" problems? I saw one on Craigslist a few years ago and it appeared to be in excellent shape and it was dirt cheap. I thought about buying it and I wish I did as it would have looked great on my 74 SCS. I do know that the 140 wb was introduced to accomodate the larger slide-ins that were startiing to become popular, up to 12'. I think Ford did it, in addition to the big super single rear tires, to compete against Chevy as GM had rolled out their dually in 73 and Ford didn't roll one out until 1980, so they had to make modifications to the 350 to accomdate a 10K GVWR without having a dually. Ford attempted to market it as a "positive" that they had the big 350 and 10K GVWR without the cumbersome dual tires, but eventually they had to roll out the dually to compete.

I probably posted this stuff on the American Road Camper.
I will post it again for the newbie's.
I once talked to the brother of an original owner of a '75 F-350 Super Camper Special we almost bought and he said the price tag with the camper was $15,000. Probably not true...

1st 4 Pictures are more from the Recreation Section.
Next 2 pictures are of a '77 Super-Cab with an American Road Camper.
Last picture is of me sitting on the hood of the '76 Super Camper Special. (I removed the driver side mirror to get rid of the incorrect '80-'86 mirrors & to put the right ones on & haven't gotten the hardware.)
We bought a rebuild kit & new air cleaner filter. Total price $72
We're gonna rebuild the Holley (again) in a little while when it gets warmer outside.

Some guys looove their Holleys... but if it'll pass smog I'd rather slap a nice Carter AFB (aka Edelbrock) on there. Tune it once and forevermore enjoy the glory of an FE with four optimized barrels.
