Historic vs street rod tags

Checking out info to tag my 1950 F1, They tell me (MVA Maryland) I can run historic if its not substantialy altered. I asked for a definition and they couldn't answer me.How is everyone tagging. and whats the advantage and disadvantage as you see it. Insurance is cheaper for historic but not a big deal.My truck has a 302 and c4 auto but everything else is pretty stock.1950 meets Marylands one time registration fee (must be 60 or older) I was wondering if anyone has historic tags with a v8 and auto and run into any hassles. Thanks in advance.I just love this site!

You'll have to dig into the DMV to see their defination and Restrictions. some allow only limited driving or special events - all states are different.

South Carolina will issue an antique tag but you are restricted to driving to car events and back. The fuzz is pretty strict about tags unless you are a politician or some one with connections. We used to run farm tags on our trucks but one of my buddies got stopped for pulling his boat fishing with a farm tag. He got a regular tag before going to court and they dropped the charges. I think that patrolman had a burr under his saddle that day. Only for farm use not personal. That sucks because I see big Suvs that have never been on a dirt road with farm tags. I got a Veteran tag for mine and it looks good on it to me. Law abiding REDNECKS, that what we is.This mail box proves it. Not mine but I would like to mount one in the back of my truck with the barrel facing back down the road.

As Dick says all states are different. I ran an historic plate (permanent horseless carriage plate- vehicle must be 35 years old) when I lived in Florida but there were strings attached to when and where I could drive it. Here in NH, I just run an antique plate (any vehicle over 20 years old). It costs only $6.00 a year and is cheaper than any other plate and there are no driving or driveline restrictions. Check with your DMV...

It just so happens that I was in on the Maryland committee meeting about this ''substantial alteration'' and the gray area is just what the politicians wanted. No one in the Md senate knew how to define it, the antique guys wanted to be able to swap from 21'' wheels to 17'' and not be harassed, the solution was the Street Rod tag. The whole thing grew out of some guy wanting to put historic tags on an Opel GT because it was no longer in production. To qualify for the SR tag it's must fit NSRA's definition of ''modified antique'' The sponsor was a gentleman named Clark and he was from Howard County. Hopes this helps somehow. The Street Rod tag is how big brother identifies our cars in a situation like the fiasco going on now in California.

Yep, all states are different. And what's worse is each clerk at every window at every DMV in every different state is different!

Here in California, I have one person I deal with and he "makes it happen for me." If I have a registration need, I make sure I make an appointment and go to his window.

He's an old Ford Guy - Edsels!

Ya gotta out manipulate the DMV!

In Washington State, Year of Manufacture plates can be run on the rear only, where standard plates must be run both front and rear, can be used on any vehicle 30 years or older, and the vehicle in question is not to be used for commercial purposes or for hauling a load. There is a one-time fee of $35, as long as the vehicle they're going on is currently registered, and you never have to renew them. They are a permenant registration. You simply have to take your plate(s) to a licensing office with your title and transfer them to your vehicle. No fuss - no muss.

i can't 'member for sure , but i believe my beloved hole in the wall has restrictions on historic / antique plates , on mileage etc. pretty much making it a permanent parade float if it's tagged as such . i just put regular tags on my ol' girl and kept on truckin' brother . i don't need a tag of special designation for all the peeps and lil' kids to realize it's old and cool . besides they damn near doubled the price of our tags cause their { state gov } broke and considering what they cost before ........... well .................................
