Hi Hernan - Welcome to FTE.

What kind of truck do you have? How dark are you wanting to go with the tint?

I can't help you on the Calif. tint laws because all states have different rules, but if you're wanting to go with just what's legal all you need to do is go to any reputable tint place and tell them what you want. They know the laws and if you should get ticketed, most will make things right.

We had the windows tinted on our Kenworth not too long ago, asked for what was the legal. A couple months later, Steve got pulled over by a Deputy to check his tint. Turns out on this big a truck you can't put anything much darker than Serran Wrap on the windows. The tint shop took off the tint, refunded our money and paid the ticket.

about the muffler, i asked first to avoid police problems..

so, that why im asking again but this time about the tint..

then im not looking a dark dark tint.. im looking something that looks "cool".. maybe under 50 percent of dark..

Well not knowing anything about the Calif laws (I know they are a bit stricter then anyware else) But I have heard from a lot of people, that you can go as dark as you want on the rear window (even block it entirely) but on the sides, and front you can't go any lower than 35% If your that worried I'm sure you could call the local police station, or even perhaps city hall to find out for sure.

Try these links:

http://www.tintshops.com/news/clarification.htm

http://www.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/

http://www.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/tint_ca.html

Basically what Joego said - 35% driver and passenger sides, as dark as wanted on back. It also lists restrictions for stickers, etc...

I have heard that if the police can't tell how many people are in the vehicle, it's too dark. I can understand that for side windows, but why not the rear windows, they make vans that don't have rear windows, what do the cops do then?

I know that here in Ohio you can go dark on the back window of a truck, but the side windows can only be 35%. On a car all windows can only be 35%. As far as the windshield goes there is a mark on the drivers side usually about 5-11" from the top called the "A" line. You are allowed to tint from the top of the window down to this line up to 35% tint. I know all these first hand because I have been ticketed for this twice. Also installing the tint on windows is on of the easiest apperance things to do, ecspecially on a truck. I'd try it myself before paying someone $100.00 or more to do it for me.

You are right. I got 35% stuck in my head from all the posts above mine. You have to let 50% of the light pass through the side windows and you are only allowed to tint down to the "A" line on the windshield. Sorry about that.

I thought this was a pretty good site regarding tinting. Didn't help us however as it doesn't apply to big/semi truck laws.

One thing I found interesting is how many out-of-staters could be ticketed if the cops really wanted to.

A Virginia State Trooper told me that if he put a tint meter on factory windows with no tint, he could almost always get a reading. He told me the best thing to do was get a reading of the windows before tinting and then I would know what light transmission tint to buy.

My experience with tint is that if it attracts attention or prevents an officer from seeing the passengers, you might get hassled or ticketd.

In calif, at least 10years ago, you could totally black out any windows behind the driver, as long as you had dual side mirrors. The driver and passenger window were limited to some percentage, but essentially as long as the officer could see, you were OK.

The windshiled is limited to what is already there. You also may not add those tint bars with car logos at the top, if they are darker than what is there. Take a close look at the windshield. Somewhere on it you will see a brand name, some numbers and an arrow over a bar. Those items will tell you how dark it is and the arrow over bar shows you the "border" of how low the tint can go, anything past the arrow/bar would be illegal.

Still it comes down to being conspicuous. If you are driving like a jerk or something on your car attracts too much attention you may get stopped and if you irritate the cop, he might start writing you up on the tint.

I drove around for many years with that mirror tint stuff on my back and side windows of a truck camper I had. Got stopped once only because the sun was at my back and the cop got blinded. He did not give me a ticket and he did not tell me to take it off, but he did mention it was a hazard to others if the sun was just right.

On another list there was a thread on this a few years back, and in general each state is different. Seemed like the hot states were more forgiving, but some of the "good ol boy" states might have a few cops that cracked down. The biggest cause for stops were stupid driving and way too dark driver tint or windshield.

There is an out. If you eye doctor writes a rpescription saying you are light sensitive you can get past quite a few local laws on tint.

Goog Luck, and don't attract attention.

Hey`
I dont know about your neck of the woods, since it would seem everywhere is different. Around here (Puyallup,WA) the common way to check is if a cop cant see/read your licence easily when you put it up to the window, its too dark. At least this has been the experience with several of my friends and I. I think they do this since its otherwise hard to check is its 25% or 35%, so they needed a simple way to check if they feel the need. Around here they will only do this if your driving like a complete....(bad word)...and deserve it. Usually cops are decent folks- be decent to them, they'll serve ya back.

I know it's a stupid question,

But I live in New Jersey, and just order a 2003 Ranger Super Cab. I've been a 100% ford guy my whole life but this is my first truck

Anyway I ordered it with the tint package... Never thought about it until I read this thread... But the back and side windows are tinted.... Any one think this would be a problem, or is the factory tinting never really a problem ie: Excursions, Explorers?
