thought you guys would like this one.here's some highlights:
7.3L IDI
I chose to use the turbo from a DT466 that I purchased off Ebay Brand New. a little while before for a different project for $200.
I decided to mount the turbo down beside the transfer case where it would be protected from anything hitting it by the skid plate, although something would have to be sticking up pretty high to hit the turbo and not the transfer case first.
It requires a pump to get the oil back to the engine, because now the turbo is below the engine and it cannot just drain the oil back into the engine by gravity like it could if it were mounted high. The easiest method here is to use the mechanical fuel pump on the passenger side of the engine block. This works great with the addition of a check valve at the turbo. Of course this requires you to install an electric fuel, which is a good option anyway.
I bought some 2.5" pipe from Advance Auto and ran it from the turbo outlet to the intake. I had to buy a straight section and 2 90 degree pieces.

I've always wanted to see a pic of his setup. Agreed that it's not a great spot for a truck that will see lots of mud or dirt. I dont really see much trouble with a street truck though. You could always make a shield for it as well. It certainly leave the engine compartment less cluttered. N/A accessability with turbo preformance.

Twice as much..... maybe more.
Right now, my super powerful 97 Stroke can't hold a candle to my IDI.
I don't know why everyone thinks Stroke turbo's would be such a great thing to install on an IDI.
If you went out an got one of the ball bearing wastegated 2500 dollars for the turbo only Stroke turbo's, then you might be able to make some high RPM power if you can keep the valley pan and head gaskets in your engine.
But add in the cost of all the custom parts you will have to make or have made for you and that is going to be an expensive turbo/engine system.
I really like being able to get 12 PSI of boost at RPM's under 2000 instead of waiting till I hit 3000 RPM to get more boost than I can use.

the biggest problem with this kind of setup would be turbo lag right?
ideally you want the turbo down the engines throat to get rid of the lag.
least thats the claims on the ford scorpion 6.7.
i wounder how bad it would be.if newer engines are striving to get it a bit closer,mounting one down under like this must be drastic?
