mini starter ??

Just put a mini starter in a f 150 ,390 with a c6 and the starter will not fully enguage. the thing sounds like a angry cat. The flywheel is new and the ft 1/3 is badley tore up. I didnt think you could install a starter wrong but??
it turnes over very hard and slow with a new stock one, and has headers so the heat and clearnce issues made me use the mini. what could be wrong?

Most starter problems arise due to poor electrical connections, a bad battery, or a starter that needs an overhaul. If all this checks out OK, the engine needs to be checked for internal damage. A overly advanced igntion can also cause problems.

The stock OEM starter has been known to work well for high compression performance engines so it should work fine (except fo course for your clearance issues).

I understand there are two types of ring gears, the common one with 184 teeth and some with only 153 teeth. Possibly you have the flywheel teeth at 153 and a starter designed for 184? I'm not too familiar with this problem, but perhaps someone else knows more details.

Additional problems can be a bad starter solenoid (firewall mounted type) and sometimes (I had one like this) the throw-out winding can have a bad ground internal to the starter.

Easy way...your old starter worked at one time..So instead of counting the teeth on the Flywheel/flexplate..Count the teeth on the starter on your old one and see if the mini has the same amount of teeth..also check from the face of the starter to the end of the starter gear on the old one and check to see if the new one throws the gear out as far...If not..your only catching the edge of the flywheel or flexplate with the Mini starter..
