Can I tow it?

Hey everybody! I have a 2010 Ford F150 Supercrew 4x4 Lariat with the 5.4 liter and the 3.73 tran. also with the Maxtow package. I am looking at buying a 35 foot travel trailer that weights 8000 pounds. It has 1000 lbs hitch weight. You figure I will pack another 1200 in there when we go camping. I plan on getting the transmission cooler. Can I tow that trailer?

I just towed my new Laredo 303tg that weighs 7500lbs with 700lbs hitch weight, I was amazed at how easy it was to pull. It was in the flat lands of Indiana though, I was totally amazed.

First off Welcome!

According to the specs on Ford's website with the max tow package you should be able to tow 11,200. So you total at around 10,200 so you should be good. But a transmission cooler would be a good investment and maybe a tranny temp gauge too.

I think you can find the answer here; 2010 Ford F-150 Towing Capacity | The Official Site of the 2010 Ford F-150 | FordVehicles.com
It looks like you can pull up to 9500# (157"WB)or 9600# (145"WB) and be within factory allowances.

PS I forgot about the "Maxtow" package, Fordtruckman is right.
The maxtow should have included a cooler. But definitely get a transmission temperature gauge.

Can you tow it with your truck? Probably. Although you might want to figure on another 800-1000lbs of stuff in that trailer above your 1200lb estimate to give yourself some leeway. You'd be amazed at all the extra crap a wife will decide to take with her on a trip when space is available.

This question also depends on where you are and where you want to tow to. For a fairly heavy trailer like that towing on flat ground shouldn't be a big issue especially at anywhere close to sea level, but if you get into high country with long grades and higher elevations you might find the truck a bit taxed with that much weight on. Remember that a naturally aspirated engine will lose 3% of its output for every 1,000 feet of elevation you gain.

I tow a similar trailer with my 04. I put on 10 ply rubber and added a set of supersprings out back to assist in keeping it level. My tougue weight is a bit higher. I'm sure the max tow 10 will handle it even better. I keep it @ 55 on open highway and its fine.

You should certainly obtain a weight distribution hitch preferably one with sway control.
See here for examples; Weight Distribution WD With Sway Control | etrailer.com
Lots of advice available in the towing forum of FTE; Towing, Trailers & 5th Wheels - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

They do and they don't... It's more like an idiot light in gauge form. They go to "regular operating temp" position until the trans is really cooking. Then it will shoot over to overheating. It doesn't show temps gradually increasing like a real gauge. An aftermarket gauge would be a good idea when towing something so close to max the vehicle's limit. I don't think another trans cooler is needed though. The max tow cooler looks pretty substantial.

if my 4.6 3v w/3.55 will tow a 7000lb t.t., yours will have no problem...we have the weight distribution hitch and single anti-sway setup...make sure the truck's antisway/traction control is on in the dash display and on the diagnostic center...helps avoid swaying out of control

You might be able to tow it, but you will not be happy towing it. Would be best to step up to the Super Duty.
