There is a cable that controls the hot/cold door. (the slider with hot on one side and cold on the other) Make sure that cable didnt' come undone at either end. My 86 was stuck on hot all the time. No fun in the summer! I traced the cable. It has mounts that hold it in place every hear and there under the dash, holding it to various bracing to hold the cable secure. one clip had come off, so whenever I moved the lever, it put slack in the cable rather than forcing the cable to move the door to the cold position.

My truck ran 3/4 over on the guage and I didn't have any heat either. This happened about 4 years ago when it was very cold. A few more miles down the road and it boiled over. I didn't have enough anti-freeze in the radiator and ice blocked the flow in the radiator, making it overheat.
