Hello I have not ever been on the big truck forum. I just bought a 67 f600
6 wheeler in pretty good shape. It needs small stuff.
My question is, They told me it had a 391 engine would it be that or a 390 I dont know much about the big truck engines. Any help would be appreciated Thank You

 

Congrats on the truck. I'm by no means an authority, but I'll try. Engines are usually; 300-6cyl, 330-v8 (couple of models) , 361-v8, 391-v8. The smaller are most common in the smaller (600) truck stock. The v8s are refered to as FT blocks/engines, a little similer to the FE 352,360,390,etc. Most parts don't interchange. If stock ( engine not changed) your vin # on the truck will need to be decoded to tell you the exact engine. Our local forum guru is recovering from an illness right now, but maybe someone else can help with the decode. Also you can search this forum for more info. Many vins have been decoded and the engines listed. The year will have to be the same for the info to work, as Ford reused code #s in different years. Spend the time reading this forum on the larger trucks, it's worth your time and will answer a lot of your questions.

A 391 is definitely a possibility. Post up the VIN number

 

Check the fourth digit of your vin:

b=300 six
c=330MD
d=330hd
e=361
f=391

 

The fouth digit on the vin is c so it is a 330md what does the md mean. And is this a good engine it seems powerful.

 

If it's a 330 and it "seems powerful" - maybe it really is a 391 and was swapped at some point

It's hard to tell what it is now, without checking the stroke. Maybe the "dowel test" that's talked about in the FE forum would work.

 

MD = Medium Duty - the more common engine.

If you can get to the crankshaft "snout", that will tell you. 361/391 crankshafts have a larger diameter through the timing cover and damper area. - don't know the numbers - try the FE forum.

Checking the stroke might be easier, though.

 

Thanks I looked on the fe forum. I found some stuff on the stroke and how to measure to see and it is a big wide block. I found a thread in the fe forum I read that a man had a 391 with 2 thermostats if i read it right. Mine has a big housing for the thermostat it curves up about 6 inches to were the hose attaches. It has a four barrel carb.

 

No 330 ever came with a 4bbl. While it's possible the intake was changed, I'm not so sure.

I think the double-thermostat setup might not be an indicator of what motor you have.

The only real way to check is stroke.

 

Uh...If that's me you are refering to...I had a stroke on the 16th of March.

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code:

1966/72 B/C/F/LN/N/NT/T500/1000: C = 330 2V Medium Duty / D = 330 2V Heavy Duty / E = 361 2V / F = 391 4V.

1964/65's use different VIN engine codes.

But...who knows after 43 years if the engine is the original...or not.

Dual thermostats will be found in many (but not all) 1964/78 FT engines. Different dual t/stat housings were used on specific trucks.

The t/stats used 1964/69 are 2 1/2" in diameter. 1970/78's are 2 1/8" in diameter.

Note: Is this an F600? Some ppl confuse the F600 with the flat nosed C Series Tilt Cabs. This does happen, as I've seen it three times here on FTE.

If this is an F600, the first three digits of the VIN will begin with F60 or F61. If anything else, it's not an F600.

Not necessarily.

The 330 M/D used FE: 352 (1965/67) and 360 (1968/72) cranks. The 330 H/D & the 361 crank is the same, but is not the same as the 330 M/D. The 391 crank is all by itself.

The harmonic balancer which bolts to the crank has an ID engineering number stamped on it. These balancers are not the same as used on FE engines.

1964/72 330 M/D ID number: C4TE-6316-H or C4TE-6316-J .. Double Sheave Pulley / 6 5/8" O/A diameter / 5 9/16" long / Uses 3/8" belts.

1964/72 330 H/D, 361, 391: There are three different harmonic balancers. Rather than having to type all this jazz, if the number on the balancer is different than what I listed for the 330 M/D, post what it is.
