Fuel tank gauge going "whacko"

Hi all,

I have a 2004 F250 6.0 pick up. Recently the fuel gauge has been giving me probs. I had a 1/4 tank and filled it up and the gauge did not move. The next day it finally, slowly moved up to full. A week later after filling it up when it was at 1/2 tank, it went all the way to dead empty triggering the low fuel light. Later in the day it went up to full.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Are you filling up with the key in the "on" position. The fuel gauges in these trucks will do this if you did. Mine did this when I first bought mine and I thought my fuel gauge was broke. It took it several days to get back to normal. Some say that after about 50 miles or so. Mine took a little longer.

Thanks all. Nope, actually the key was off and in my pocket. Never had this issue until the last several fill up's. All with the key off.

Thanks gearloose1. I plowed through that thread and must have missed it. Can you tell me about where the general reset instructions are? Thanks again!

I wanted to add that your abs light might be on after this. Dont worry about it. Just drive the vehicle and it will reset in 5-10 secs.

Thanks for the advise. I'll give it a whirl. If I pass out at say, T minus 7 minutes, I'll make sure I leave the batts disconnected at least for the 10 minutes or until I regain consciousnes...which ever comes first.

Also having the same problem with fuel gauge. Happened a couple of months ago and seemed to rectify itself. This time the gauge has gone to below empty and I am also getting the low fuel warning chime. Will remove the tank this weekend wx permitting and replace the sender. Ford wants some 500 or so for replacement but that is the whole pickup pump and all. It looks like you can replace the float system by itself as long as it is not welded to the pickup assembly. Hopefully that is the case. Any other ideas would be much appreciated. Will probably harpoon the tank while it is off also.

the issue is with the sender. most of the ones we see will throw a p0460 code. also most are caused by water damage. you will notice rust on the flat arm and what not.

Yep, again cheezit is (probably) correct. Same thing happened to my truck, took it in for regular service interval, had to replace the sender due to the rust on the arm. Looked kinda nasty also and had them do a tank clean and flush. It was loaded with rust in the bottom of the tank.

Cheezit, is it usually possible to change only the sender (mine is a 04 late 03 build) or are the two parts usually welded together. Thanks Jerry
