92 explorer 4x4 problems first 4x4 i have ever owned
bought vehicled dirt cheap. Driving it home thought front brakes where falling out or loose. got home 24 miles later, drivers side hub pulled right off wheel. are the bearings in the hubs? Can i just replace driver hub or should i replace the whole axle? Are the front axles like the half shafts on front wheel drive vehicles? what would cause the hub to break ? just bought vehicle do not know it 4x4 lights on dash work ? with automatic hubs should all wheels spin all the time?

If your `92 is the same as the `94 I used to have then the front axle is not the same as a front wheel drive car. It is more like a rear wheel drive axle but with universal joints at the wheel ends.
What you should have is a tubular spindle attached to the steering knuckle. The wheel bearings are inside the wheel hub and slide on to the spindle and are held on by large nuts. The axle shafts come through the center of the spindle tube to the auto hubs. The hubs are free when in 2wd but when 4wd is selected and the axle shafts start to be driven the hubs will automatically lock and so drive the front wheels.
