302/332 Y-block questions??
Hi everybody,
Can anybody help with info on the 302/332 y-block truck engines? Will any parts interchange with standard 272/292?
What I know is: 1) they were available in bigger (above F350) trucks. 2) Everybody thinks I'm confused about year and/ or displacement. Like when you ask for 223 parts and they assume it's a MOPAR slant six. 3) They weigh a LOT (long block is bending my four leg engine stand).
What I've been told: 1) they'll take an eighth inch overbore .125 (try that in a chevy ). 2) Lincolns used a version of it.
The only thing scarcer than info is parts. Kanter Automotive has gaskets but not much else. Any other sources??
Thanks,
Jim

302/332 Y-block questions??
The truck y-block family consisted of:
279 52-55
317 (same as Lincoln, only "truck-ized" 52-55
302 and 332 56-64 I believe.
Nothing switches with the other y-blocks.
Lincoln cars had a 341, and some Mercurys had a 368 which should have some similar parts (manifolds for one)
Parts are practically non-exisitent. I have a 1954 F-750 with the 279 and getting parts is difficult. If you tell me what you need I can give you some sources....

302/332 Y-block questions??
I have a '56 332 and a '63 302(?), both complete w/trans.
I'm searching for rebuild parts - mainly. Gaskets (!!), timing chain, oil pump, cam/lifters & other valvetrain parts. ....and information . Is the 1/8 in (.125) overbore for real? How much does one of these actually weigh? Part number/ ID info are also sadly lacking on this site as well as the Y-block site.
I'm looking for my '56 shop manual (it's around here SOMEWHERE), but I don't remember any mention of a 332. More on that after I find that dern book !?!?
Your opinions??? Am I wizzin' in the wind? I thought one of these would be "different" in my '56, but I'm beginning to wonder whether it's worth the hassle.
To explain "different": The truck this is intended for is my 1/2ton panel. It's four-wheel drive (converted before I bought it). I figured one of these engines would make PLENTY of torque, especially when coupled with the 5spd OD tranny I got with the 302. And it certainly would NOT be a run-of-the-mill combination.
Thoughts????

For parts, check the online store here first to see what's available (help support the site). If you can't find what you want, you can get:
- gasket sets
- pistons
- connecting rods (bushings, bearings)
- camshafts (bearing sets)
- timing chains and gears
- crank mains
- tappets/lifters
- valves (springs)
- rocker arms and shafts
- push rods
- oil pumps
- and a few other things
for both engines from Joblot Automotive (800-221-0172). Ask for James - he's done a great job for me on a number of orders.

302 bore = 3.625, stroke = 3.66
332 bore = 3.8, stroke = 3.66
My WAG is that these units are 50 to 75 lbs more than a 272/292 Y-block. Anybody got that number?
As far as ID goes, these are the two engines with the Ram's Horn exhaust - none of the other Y-blocks had those manifolds as stock. The intake ports for the front and rear pairs of cylinders on each head are side-by-side for the 302/279/332/337, they are top-and-bottom for the other Y-blocks.

302/332 Y-block questions??
The Lincoln engines 317/341/368 are the same block and would make a nice swap in a F100-350. The 368 was also in the 57 Merc as a one year option.
I remember as a kid a Ford dealer who was installing the 368 in brand new F350 wreckers.
I have a 55 F100 out back that may be a candidate for a 368 later this year.
The 279/302/332 are purely truck blocks and went into the Big Job 700-900 series. The head design and cam are strictly for low rpm torque and they breathe poorly at the speeds we are used to.
The rams manifolds on those blocks will not fit the Ford Y. Some Ford trucks, mainly F 600 and COE's had Y Rams and those are the ones people are after.
Hard to find one that isnt cracked. However there is talk of reproduction.
Speed and dress up parts for the Lincolns is available but scarce and usually expensive. The 56-7 Continental valve covers look nice.

302/332 Y-block questions??
In my 1954-55 Truck shop manual it says that everything but the block, pistons, rings, pin bushings, carburator, and heads are interchangeable between the 279 and 317.
Does the truck 317 have a different cam than the car 317?
What's the difference in the heads?
I have a 279, it has two different heads on it, with different spark plugs because in 55 they went to the 18 mm plug and my truck must have a replacement head.

302/332 Y-block questions??
Wow a lot happens when I don't check in for a while....
For sampine336: Yep, I've got 5 OD (light or medium duty) I haven't degreased it enough to bother with yet. They also made a HD 5 OD but it's a monster. Sorry it's not for sale. I found this one by accident after searching for three years. I found one other, but the salvage yard that had it wanted $400. Seemed a bit high (to me) for a nearly fifty yr old tranny.
ram horns: There is another thread here about ram horns. You say COE's had them?? I'll have to check mine, I think whoever got the heads off it got them too.
268Merc: I was doing more teardown on the 302 tonight and notice what I considered TEENY-TINY exhaust ports. Honestly, no truck y-block (272/292 or 302/332) was intended for sustained 65+ driving.
Half Ton Fun/Authur Gould: contact info??
Earl's Owner: I see right now that you & I are going to have to get together for or parts swappin' or yarn tellin' or maybe just coffee. Too bad I didn't know you when you started Earl.... I could've gotten you another 1/2 or 3/4 ton frame in MUCH better shape! 182 rivets PHEW!!!
BTW:I was just instructing a young guy on the use of "I have no opinion, Dear".

Ive had 3 sets of them, 2 came from F-600's and one from a C-500. Ive also heard that Canadian built used them a lot.

Hey I just lost 18 cubes here!
Yep those heads wont do much for power over about 3 grand, built-in governors.
The 272/292 were limited by the rear ends and if they werent governed then they could still wind up. The best heads were 57-9, after that Ford detuned the Y every year in cars and trucks as they wanted to emphasize the FE as the HP generator.
The best 292 blocks are considered the 61-4 HD trucks. They had the forged crank and stronger rods; rumors abound that the block was harder also and gave better ring life.
Ive a C1TE block bored .060 in my 54 F350 with 57-8 ECZ-G heads. It should be a strong runner once winter ends and I can get it finished....about 4' of snow piled up in front and side of it now.

C0AE-6600-D Pump, Oil Pump 302/332 (that's a car part #, which car engine I can't say...no book).
Gear to Gear=no timing chain used in 302/332
B6Q-6256-A Timing Gear
C3TZ-6306-A Crankshaft Gear
C3TZ-6250-A Camshaft
C4AZ-6500-B Tappets (once again, a car part number).
C3TZ-6008-C Gasket Set, Complete.
I'd be happy to provide more parts numbers if you wish.
Shop manual: I don't have one...ebay would be a good place to look...some are now available on a CD. Since these engines didn't change much...a shop manual from any of the years 1956 thru 1963 should work for you.
